The Discovery District is an artistic hub in downtown Columbus

A vibrant atmosphere and artistic landmarks define the Discovery District in downtown Columbus. You can find murals and public art, as well as popular galleries and the Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD). You can also walk from your condo to Topiary Park, a uniquely landscaped green space that hosts summer events. Because it is downtown, there are plenty of major employers in and around the area.

Locals enjoy the Columbus Museum of Art and other galleries

The Discovery District joins Short North and the Franklinton Arts District as one of Columbus’ most colorful areas. “If you go outside the Columbus Museum of Art, to the left you see a giant, 100-foot art sign,” says Leah Berger, director of public relations at Experience Columbus, a marketing organization. “It literally spells out the word ‘art,’ and that is at the center of Columbus College of Art and Design’s campus.” You can visit:

  • The Columbus Museum of Art, where the permanent collection includes works from Claude Monet and Norman Rockwell
  • The Beeler Gallery at CCAD, which showcases contemporary and experimental art
  • The Losinski Gallery at the main branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library
  • The Columbus Performing Arts Center, where anyone can audition for community theatre productions
  • Blockfort, which rotates exhibits from up-and-coming local artists
“We have world-class museums here, and it’s another reason for living downtown...” says Matt McPeck, president of the Downtown Residents Association of Columbus. “You just can’t get that in the suburbs.” The library’s Culture Pass offers free admission to theatrical performances, museums and other attractions across the city.

Apartments and condos attract a large rental population

Over 90% of the residents in the Discovery District rent. “There’s a lot more rental around there, lots of apartments being built, because that’s who wants to be in the area, to be walkable and not have a car,” says Becky Warnement, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker and longtime Columbus resident. You’ll find red brick and contemporary apartments and condos in the area. Most complexes include amenities like on-site maintenance and parking. Condos can range in price from the mid-$200,000s to the mid-$500,000s, and have monthly HOA fees of about $300 to $600. While most townhouses in the area were built in the 2000s, their red brick exteriors give them an older appearance. These generally cost between the mid-$500,000s and the high $600,000s. Single-family homes are harder to come by. Properties date back to the early 1900s, including American Foursquares and National Folk-styles. Recent listings have ranged from the mid-$200,000s to the low $600,000s.

Residents spend time at the unique Topiary Park and other green spaces

Topiary Park is a one-of-a-kind green space next to the Columbus Metropolitan Library. This landscaped re-creation of Georges Seurat’s famous painting, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” is made up of yew trees. “It’s super beautiful,” says Cameron Walker, public relations manager at Experience Columbus. “I’d recommend going there for a picnic.”

Washington Gladden Social Justice Park is also in the neighborhood. Its central focus is the Pathway of Justice, which has a mural of quotes from renowned social justice leaders. Within minutes, you can be at the Scioto Mile, a collection of riverfront parks with multiuse trails and a boat launch.

Events at the art museum and Topiary Park bring people together

There are plenty of events in the Discovery District. At CCAD, you can attend concerts, gallery openings and other community events. The most popular program at the Columbus Museum of Art is the recurring Bar, Art and Music Thursdays, locally called BAM Thursdays. The museum offers free late-night admission with food trucks, drinks and live music every week from the end of May through September. “It just brings everybody together,” McPeck says. During the summer, Topiary Park hosts the Sundays in the Park music series, movie nights and the annual Columbus Book Festival.

You can walk to nearby coffee shops, bars and restaurants

In addition to the many galleries, the neighborhood offers a wide range of dining options, including:

  • The Roosevelt Coffeehouse, a cafe that shares proceeds with local nonprofits
  • Pierogi Mountain, which serves Polish classics and unique flavors
  • Pins Mechanical Co., a bar with an arcade and bowling lanes
  • Charmy’s Persian Taste, an authentic Persian restaurant in Charmy’s Market
  • Dirty Frank’s Hot Dog Palace, which serves specialty beef, vegan and vegetarian dogs

The Discovery District is highly walkable, with major employers nearby

You can walk to school or work, with CCAD and Columbus State Community College in the neighborhood. OhioHealth Grant Medical Center is also in the area and is a Level I Trauma Center. “If you are in the medical community and you want to be close [to work], you get a lot of people living right there,” Warnement says. Major employers like Nationwide Insurance have offices in the Uptown District, less than a mile away.

You can also ride your bike or rent a scooter from Veo or Spin. Central Ohio Transit Authority buses and access to Interstate 71 keep the neighborhood well-connected to major shopping areas like Easton.
