German Village

History preserved by German Village Society
The neighborhood began in the mid-1800s as German immigrants flocked to Columbus, building a dense, working-class community. Since its creation, German Village has been added to the National Register of Historic Places and received national recognition as a successful urban revitalization and preservation model. "When we're talking about character, it doesn't get much more character than German Village," Ritchie says. Cottages dating back to the 1850s and red brick Italianate-style homes line the streets. Prices typically range from around $400,000 to $800,000, although some listings have sold for over $1 million. While new construction and change have come to the area, Ritchie explains that the not-for-profit German Village Society dictates what can and can't be done to the exterior of homes. "You can do whatever you want to the interior, but they want to maintain the integrity of the neighborhood in terms of the look of it."Happy hour on Lindey’s patio
All throughout German Village are shops and restaurants — some of which are in the top 10 in Columbus. Ritchie suggests Barcelona and its Spanish-style tapas or Lindey’s. She says, “Lindey’s is famous for their happy hour on their patio. That is the place to be in the warmer months.” Schmidt’s Sausage Haus, a family-run restaurant that’s been in the community for more than 120 years, stands as a pillar of the community’s food scene. In terms of new businesses, Ritchie says, “There’s a new one that was just opened that everybody’s crazy about. It’s called Cento’s. It’s an Italian restaurant and very high-end.” On Saturday afternoons, locals love to raid the shelves of The Book Loft of German Village, one of the nation’s largest independent bookstores. The shop features 32 rooms of discounted books, and people come from all over to check out its collection. When locals need to restock their fridges, a Kroger is 1/2 a mile away in the neighboring Brewery District.Schiller Park, the neighborhood’s pride and joy
German Village is home to Schiller Park, a point of pride among residents. “It’s like a mini-Boston Commons,” broker Trent Eckler of Red 1 Realty says. “The green spaces are so important when you have that dense urban environment.” A recent addition to the park is the Huntington Garden Promenade, a brick-paved, tree-lined walkway with perennial floral arrangements. The park also has an amphitheater that hosts live Shakespearean plays during the summer. One mile away is Scioto Audubon Metro Park, the Scioto River and The Grange Audubon Center. At The Grange, visitors can take in the Columbus skyline and see if they can spot some of the 212 bird species that call the park their home.Garden tours and seasonal soirées
German Village is no stranger to social events. Ritchie shares, “We have a house and garden tour in June. There are dinners and soirées that different neighbors host, and all the proceeds from those events go to the German Village Historical Society.” The Society also oversees the German Village Farmers Market, which takes place at the German Village Meeting Haus every Saturday from May to November. “I could go on and on; there’s all kinds of fun things on a fairly routine basis,” Ritchie says.Education for German Village students
Public school students living in German Village attend Siebert Elementary School. For grades seven through 12, learners attend South High School, which offers dual enrollment courses through Columbus State Community College. Both schools earn a C-minus rating on Niche. The unrated St. Mary School, a co-educational, private Roman Catholic school, is also in the neighborhood.
Walking all over the Village
“People who really value walking to things love it here,” Ritchie says. “Like walking to the coffee shop, grabbing cocktails with friends and not having to drive, walking their dog in the park. And people really get to know each other, too, maybe because we are out walking all the time!” When not exploring the neighborhood, locals can access Interstate 71, plus U.S. State Routes 33 and 23. Bus stops are available all along South High Street, and John Glenn Columbus International Airport is 7 miles away.Crime
German Village has an overall CAP Index Score of 7 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. This score is heavily influenced by higher-than-average scores for property crime rather than violent crime. The Community Crime Patrol, a not-for-profit organization, makes efforts to decrease crime in the area by deploying trained citizen patrollers six days a week.
