An historic neighborhood heavily occupied by student renters
Northwood Park is a neighborhood where residents can take a morning stroll to a local coffee shop or spend the evening listening to live music at any of the area's multiple performance venues. On the weekends, neighbors enjoy backyard cookouts in preparation for Ohio State Buckeyes football games, which they can walk to. The community borders the university's campus, and therefore buzzes with collegiate energy. “The neighborhood went from being occupied mostly by homeowners to being rented by students,” says Lorraine Deal, who lived in the neighborhood from 1976 until 2023. “But there are still plenty of homeowners left. Because of the noise ordinances, the students are quiet.” In the early 1900s, Northwood Park was one of the first Columbus suburbs to be developed. Northwood Park exemplifies early 20th-century American architecture so well that in 1989 it was added to the Columbus Register of Historic Properties. The community also has a diverse selection of restaurants where patrons are likely to run into people they know. The neighborhood’s public greenspace is equipped with a pool, sports fields and biking trail access along the Olentangy River.
Near Ohio Stadium, the Ohio State Fair and several live music venues
Old North Columbus’ historic commercial district is home to music venues like Ace of Cups and The Spacebar, where people can catch both local and nationally touring acts. With the university only blocks away, Northwood Park residents are never far from a college sports game. Ohio Stadium, which is home of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team, is less than a mile south. It also doubles as a concert venue and has drawn major musical acts like The Rolling Stones and Taylor Swift. Northwood Park is a mile from St. John’s Arena, where residents can catch a college basketball game or attend the “Skull Session,” a pep rally and game day tradition held before football games. The Historic Crew Stadium, about 1-½ miles east, has hosted musical acts like Journey and Green Day. Studio 35 Cinema & Drafthouse is 1-½ miles north. Patrons enjoy pizza and draft beer while watching new film releases, cult classics and stand-up comedy. The Ohio History Center is about 2 miles to Northwood Park's east. The museum explores Ohio’s history spanning as far back as the Ice Age. The Ohio State Fair is held annually about 1-½ miles southeast of Northwood Park. The Summit Music Hall, about a half mile from the neighborhood, hosts live music and comedy.
Historic American Foursquares and Craftsman-style homes
“Because of the historic designation, there are some restrictions on what you can do to the outside of the houses. In other words, you can’t turn them into McMansions,” Deal says. Almost all of the area’s houses were developed in the early 20th century. The neighborhood is populated with American Foursquares from the 1910s and 20s. Wood-exterior foursquares sell for as low as $280,000, and brick foursquares sell for as high as $500,000. Craftsman-style houses from the turn of the 20th century sell for between $300,000 and $430,000. The neighborhood’s early 20th-century National Folk-style houses sell for as high as $650,000. “It’s a good value because it is right at the median price point for Columbus,” says Realtor Oliver Chapman, who sells houses in the neighborhood with Keller Williams Real Estate Consultants. “Clintonville, to the north, is dramatically more expensive, and the Short North Arts District, to the south, is also much more expensive. Northwood Park has the same styles of homes as a lot of what you find in the Short North and Clintonville.”
Dining on North High Street and within Old North Columbus’ commercial district
The stretch of North High Street that cuts through Northwood Park is lined with homes, apartment complexes and shops, including Kafe Kerouac, a coffee house, bar and used bookstore with live music and poetry nights. The Northwood Park area is “a mix of college students, graduate students and families who’ve lived here for a long time,” says Mike Heslop, owner of Kafe Kerouac. “There are buildings that have been here for over 100 years.” Just down the street, Cazuelas Mexican Restaurant & Cantina offers a Latin flare. Diaspora specializes in Korean cuisine and cocktails. “Most of these places have a predominantly student vibe,” Chapman says. Northwood Park is half a mile south of Old North Columbus’ commercial district, an architecturally unique area listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s packed with restaurants, bars, shops and music venues. There, residents will find restaurants like Ray Ray’s Hog Pit, an award-winning barbeque joint with a patio, and Jack & Benny’s Old North Diner, a university district staple. Northwood Park also has a CVS. Aldi is less than a mile northeast of Northwood Park.
Tuttle Park and the Olentangy River
For outdoor activities, the 48-acre Tuttle Park is located on the neighborhood’s western side, easily within walking distance of residents. The sprawling greenspace has athletic fields, basketball and tennis courts, a swimming pool, a skatepark and woodland trails on the banks of the Olentangy River. "The river is good for urban kayaking," Chapman says. The park also offers an access point for the scenic Olentangy Trail, a pedestrian path that traverses the city from Worthington to Downtown Columbus. The trail also allows people to bike or walk to multiple city parks and attractions.
Weinland Park Elementary, Dominion Middle and Whetstone High
Weinland Park Elementary School is less than 2 miles south and has a C-minus Niche rating. Dominion Middle School, a mile north of the community, has a C Niche rating. Whetstone High School, about 3-½ miles to the neighborhood’s northwest, has a C-plus Niche rating. The high school offers Advanced Placement classes and a College Credit Plus program, both of which provide students dual credit in both high school and college courses.
Getting around Columbus
Downtown Columbus is 3-½ miles south of Northwood Park via Summit Street. There are public bus stops on North High Street and Summit Street. The streets are lined with sidewalks, and the neighborhood’s central proximity to amenities makes it easy to get around on foot. “When there are football games, the area gets pretty congested,” Chapman says. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is 2 miles south of Northwood Park. John Glenn Columbus International Airport is 8 miles east.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
