Schumacher Place draws young professionals
Once overshadowed by nearby German Village, Schumacher Place is making a name for itself compared to its neighbor. "It's basically German Village lite, but you're not getting a lot of the tourists coming to German Village to go to Schmitt's," Realtor John Kohlhepp of Keller Williams Capital Partners Realty says. He explains that the neighborhood offers the same brick-paved streets and historic architecture as German Village but less of the crowds. Jeff Ruff, Realtor at Vutech-Ruff, Cutler Real Estate, also emphasizes how Schumacher Place's amenities entice a crowd different from its neighbor's. "It isn't quite as old as German Village, but it's still considered a cool, urban neighborhood," Ruff says. "It's very attractive to young professionals."
Developing dining scene and long-standing attractions
Schumacher Place has a small but growing list of dining options. Parsons North Brewing Co. is a favorite because of its large outdoor patio and rotating lineup of local food trucks. It's also where residents can pick up locally grown produce every Saturday from January to April at the winter farmers market. When the market is closed for the season, locals get their grocery hauls at All People's Fresh Market or Little Village's IGA. Comune is next door to the brewery and specializes in fresh vegan and vegetarian fare. "It's one of the best vegan places I've ever been to," Kohlhepp says. "I'm not vegan; it's just good food." For a hearty breakfast or lunch, Skillet is also one of Kohlhepp's favorites and popular for its farm-to-table menu, while The Mercury Diner is loved for its retro, cosmic-themed décor. The area is also home to one of the city's premier cultural attractions: Wagner-Hagans Auto Museum, which consistently ranks among Columbus' top destinations and is packed with antique cars, motorcycles, military vehicles and auto signage.

Leafy, brick-paved streets for lower prices
On a stroll through the neighborhood's leafy roadways, early 20th-century homes with Italianate, Cape Cod, Colonial and traditional style influences can be seen among contemporary-style structures. Homes typically sell between $300,000 and $700,000, although some have sold for over $1 million. Carol Ross, co-president of the Schumacher Place Civic Association, says the relatively lower home prices contribute to its resurgence. "It's a gem where you can get a beautiful old brick house without paying German Village prices," Ross says. She also shares that walkability is a major selling point for many of the neighborhood's residents. "You can walk up to the brewery or walk to shops. You don't have to get in your car to get around."

Events put on by neighborhood civic association
The Schumacher Place Civic Association (SPCA), a voluntary but membership-based organization supporting the neighborhood, orchestrates many of the area’s events. Annually, the SPCA hosts a community yard sale, an Earth Day community cleanup and seasonal gatherings, such as a fall festival and summer block party. Neighbors also meet for monthly socials and tend the neighborhood’s community gardens together.
Playtime at nearby Schiller Park
For a bit of fresh air, Schiller Park in German Village is the go-to spot. Visitors love to walk the tree-lined brick paths that wind around the park’s lush lawns and picturesque ponds. Kids get together for playdates at the playground while groups enjoy team sports on the tennis and basketball courts. Residents can also get a membership at the Schiller Community Center to use its indoor recreational facilities. During the summer, live performances are a tradition at the open-air theater south of the park. Other nearby but smaller green spaces accessible to residents include Kobacker Park and Frank Fetch Park, which features a colorful garden filled with seasonal flowers and plants.
