Living near OSU and downtown in Scioto Woods on the west side

Scioto Woods is an established, family-friendly neighborhood on Columbus' west side, a short drive from the Ohio State University’s campus. Downtown isn’t far either; even so, the neighborhood’s mature greenery gives it a more suburban feel. A mix of housing types and price points appeals to a variety of lifestyles and budgets.

Housing styles, HOA options and recent home prices

Most of what you’ll find along these sidewalk-lined streets are single-family homes from the 1990s and early 2000s. Many were built in New Traditional styles, with Colonial- or Tudor Revival-inspired details. Attached garages and basements are common, along with spacious, fenced-in backyards and mature shade trees. Several tributaries of the Scioto River run through wooded areas of the neighborhood, with some homes backing up to these tree-lined corridors.

For lower-maintenance living, some HOA-managed sections offer multifamily homes. Darby Pointe, with quarterly dues, has rental-friendly townhouses and single-family homes on modest lots. Colony Hill, one of the community’s older sections with 1970s-era condos, has monthly dues.

Based on recent sales, condos and townhouses have ranged from under $100,000 to the high $200,000s, while most single-family homes have sold from the high $200,000s to the mid-$400,000s, depending on size, condition and updates.

According to longtime local Ron Kendle, broker-owner of RE/MAX Town Center, Scioto Woods is a sought-after area, especially for first-time homebuyers, which means listings move fast. “It’s quiet, family-friendly and a seller’s market right now. Houses do not last long.”

What driving to downtown, OSU and the airport looks like

Scioto Woods is car-dependent but well-connected to major roadways. Trabue Road crosses the Scioto River, linking to U.S. Route 33 and offering a roughly 10- to 15-minute drive to Ohio State's campus, under 5 miles away. For longer trips, Interstate 70 runs along the community’s south end, connecting to Interstates 270 and 670 nearby. Key highway commutes include:

  • Downtown Columbus, under 10 miles away and about 15 to 30 minutes by car
  • Dublin and John Glenn Columbus International Airport, under 15 miles away and about 15 to 30 minutes by car
  • Polaris, under 25 miles away and about 25 to 40 minutes by car

Parks, trails and golf courses expand outdoor options nearby

Scioto Woods Park and Redick Park are the community’s outdoor escapes. The namesake park has a playground, picnic tables and a paved walking trail. It’s also a regular food truck court. Redick Park adds wooded trails, ball diamonds and basketball courts. More outdoor spots are close by:

  • Raymond Memorial Golf Course (within a mile), a Robert Trent Jones Sr.–designed course with 18 holes and summer junior golf programs
  • Quarry Trails Metro Park (under 5 miles), an almost 200-acre retired quarry turned recreation destination with multi-use trails, a waterfall and a sport climbing area
  • Scioto Country Club (within 5 miles), a private club with a historic golf course and additional recreational and social amenities

How school zoning and choice work in Scioto Woods for families

When considering a move to Scioto Woods, it’s important to establish which school district your prospective address falls into. Columbus City Schools (CCS), Hilliard City Schools (HCS) and South Western City Schools (SWCS) serve the community, offering different school choice and open enrollment options.

CCS runs a lottery each spring that gives families a chance to apply for magnet and specialty school seats across the district. Ohio law also lets students transfer to other districts at no cost through open enrollment, but each board independently decides whether to accept outside students and how many seats to make available each year.

HCS is a highly rated district that does not operate magnet schools or participate in open enrollment. Students are assigned to schools based on their attendance area, and intra-district transfers are limited.

SWCS does not operate magnet programs but offers limited intra-district options, with school assignments primarily based on residence.

No matter where families live, all students are eligible to apply to Columbus Preparatory Academy, a highly rated public charter school located right in the neighborhood that enrolls students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Easy access to big-box stores along Hilliard Rome Road

Takeout spots are minutes from home, ranging from Chinese to Italian. For errand runs, residents typically head toward Hilliard. Hilliard Rome Road is less than 5 miles from most homes, roughly a 10- to 15-minute drive. The commercial corridor is lined with big-box stores and chain restaurants, including Meijer, Target and Texas Roadhouse.
