Somerset is zoned for Gahanna schools with Easton shopping close by

Though it’s in northeastern Columbus, Somerset might have more in common with its neighbor Gahanna. In addition to having easy access to the suburb’s recreation and dining options, the area’s eastern section is zoned for Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools: a highly rated district. Somerset is also close to the Easton Town Center, one of Ohio’s largest shopping centers. Despite its prime location, the community’s real estate prices tend to be lower than many nearby neighborhoods.

What housing styles and home prices look like here

Long stretches of road are lined with mature trees and sidewalks, and many of them end in cul-de-sacs. Lawns are usually well-kept, and attached garages are common. More than two-thirds of residents rent, with apartments making up most of the neighborhood’s housing. But single-family homes are still a big part of the mix, ranging from midcentury designs to newer 21st-century builds. Split-level and ranch-style houses from the 1960s and ‘70s usually sell in the $200,000s, while Craftsman-style homes from the early 2000s range from the low $300,000s to the high $400,000s. Some of the newer developments also include monthly HOA fees between $15 and $70, which typically cover services like snow removal. The median home price in Somerset lands around the low $300,000s, making it comparable to Wexmoor, but generally less expensive than places like Woodside Green, Gahanna-Havens Corners and Easton. However, it’s often priced higher than Framingham, Bridgeview or Cumberland Ridge.

School zoning includes Columbus and Gahanna-Jefferson districts

The majority of the neighborhood is zoned for Columbus Public Schools, one of the largest districts in the state. Homes east of Stelzer Road, however, are part of Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools, which Niche rates among the top 10 districts in Ohio for athletics. Lincoln High School has won dozens of district and conference championships in football and track and field. In Columbus City Schools, families can apply to magnet and alternative schools through a districtwide lottery, where admission mostly depends on seat availability and a random draw. Gahanna-Jefferson keeps it simpler, with students assigned to neighborhood schools and transfers handled through an application review that depends on capacity and district priorities, not a lottery.

Highway and bus access make commuting straightforward

Interstate 270 borders Somerset, creating a straightforward route to Columbus, which is less than 10 miles away: a 15-minute drive, depending on traffic. The Central Ohio Transit Authority has several bus stops in the area on Agler and Stelzer roads. Dr. Nawwaf Lamin Abass, the founder of Doctors of Hope Health Services and a Somerset resident, says the neighborhood’s location is part of its appeal. “I’m five minutes out from the mall,” he says, noting that parking is generally easy to find. “And I’m just two minutes to five minutes from the airport.”

Major shopping and local dining options are minutes away

Just north of Somerset, the Easton Town Center has over 200 retailers, big-box stores and supermarkets like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. “Every shop you would want is there,” says Thomas Hamrick, a Realtor with Keller Williams Consultant Realty and a lifetime Columbus resident. “Indoor shopping, outdoor shopping. If you’re going to see Santa at Christmas, you’re going to go to Easton.” The neighborhood is also a quick drive from several locally owned restaurants:

  • Forbidden Root serves creative American dishes alongside house-brewed botanical beers in a modern brewpub setting.
  • Northstar Café focuses on seasonal, from-scratch cooking with organic ingredients.
  • Lola & Giuseppe’s Trattoria serves house-made pastas and traditional Italian dishes in a family friendly atmosphere.
  • The Barn at Rocky Fork Creek is a Gahanna-based steakhouse known for classic cuts and a polished ambiance.
