South Franklinton

Suburban Neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio

Franklin County 43206, 43223

$204,712 Average Value

With a mix of apartments and single-family homes, South Franklinton offers convenience to downtown and major highways. This neighborhood is across the Scioto River from downtown Columbus and near the intersection of Interstates 70 and 71.

It’s common to see homes over 100 years old, from a two-and-a-half-story farmhouse from 1900 to a renovated Foursquare from the end of the 19th century. You could find a home that needs renovation for under $100,000 and expect to pay over $200,000 for a home that has been refurbished. There’s also a minimal traditional house from 1957 that has three bedrooms. The typical home in South Franklinton will have between two and four bedrooms and anywhere from 800 to 1,800 square feet. 90% of the people in South Franklinton rent their homes.

Whether it’s indoor or outdoor activity, the Sullivant Gardens Community Center on Renick Street provides activity for the community. Outside, there’s a playground and basketball court. While inside, you can pump iron in the weight room or practice your digs and spikes on the volleyball court. As part of the activities at the center, a mobile produce market shows up every Thursday from May to November. Volunteers are on hand to assist you with loading your goods into your car. There are also youth and adult fitness classes and a reading club for kids ages five to 13.

In addition to after-school programs at the Sullivant Gardens Community Center, a Columbus-based organization called My Project USA, which is based in the nearby Hilltop neighborhood, provides similar opportunities for kids. “We have programs for all ages, elementary through high school. That includes after-school homework help and a chance for high school students to do extra credit,” says My Project USA director of administration Uzair Qidwai. “A different professional comes every Friday to speak to kids about their careers and professions.”

Kids in South Franklinton attend Columbus City Schools, including Sullivant Elementary School. The Niche website says that the student-to-teacher ratio is 14-to-1. Central Preparatory Academy is a public charter school that serves kindergarten through eighth grade. The school offers full-day kindergarten and free meals and transportation for eligible students. Finland Middle School receives a B-minus grade for the teaching staff. The West High School building opened in 1929 and was designed by the same architect who designed Ohio Stadium, the home of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team.

To stock up your pantry, hit the ALDI on Mound Street for the essentials. Remember to bring your bags and put a quarter down for a deposit on a shopping cart. On the corner of Mound and Harrisburg Pike is a shopping center with a Tim Horton’s donut shop at the forefront. Deeper into the shopping center is China King, for eat-in or take-out when you don’t feel like creating a meal masterpiece at home.

On the other side of Interstate 70 is the Franklinton neighborhood, and Dodge Park is one of the popular attractions in the southern part of that neighborhood on Sullivant Avenue. The park features a skatepark designed by the father of famed skateboarder Tony Hawk. There’s also a community pool and walking trails.
