Small renovated homes at accessible price points
A plethora of 720- to 815-square-foot shotgun and bungalow homes line the streets of South Linden. Larger options include American Foursquares and duplexes with gambrel roofing. Because the area dates back to 1908, the two- to three-bedroom homes have been developed over more than a century. “There have been a lot of flips and renovations in that area, and new construction has started to pop up, too,” says Hamrick. “The highest price you’re going to see in South Linden is around $180,000, and the houses that have not been renovated can fall closer to $100,000, which is unheard of in the Columbus market.” The homes are densely packed with small, shallow yards. Driveways line the sides of the properties, but on-street parking is still common.Transit center links locals to downtown Columbus
The Linden Transit Center at the area's southern end was built in 1999 and was the first bus stop to serve South Linden. The space also provides childcare, an ATM and information riders may need to use the Central Ohio Transit Authority, or COTA. While the area is primarily car-dependent, multiple bus stops along Cleveland Avenue, Hamilton Avenue and McGuffey Road connect locals to downtown Columbus, Ohio State University and its medical center, each within 4.5 miles of the area. South Linden’s proximity to I-71 also allows residents to reach John Glenn Columbus International Airport, less than 6 miles away.Columbus City STEM school within walking distance
Public school students in South Linden are zoned for Columbus City Schools. Students living on the neighborhood's northern end are within walking distance of Linden-McKinley STEM Academy, which serves seventh through 12th grades and has a D-plus from Niche. The school offers three career-tech certification programs focused on engineering and robotics. Other options in the area include Como Elementary, which earned a C-minus from Niche. Dominion Middle School received a C rating, while nearby Whetstone High School earned a C-plus.Food pantry provide fresh produce to locals
When the neighborhood’s grocery store went vacant, it was transformed into Linden Fresh Food Market. While the market isn't a full-service grocery store, the food pantry does offer fresh produce and a free pharmacy. Locals can also make the nearly 2-mile trip to ALDI, which sits on the other side of I-71. Cleveland Avenue is the main commercial strip in South Linden, with shops, corner markets and restaurants. While unassuming on the outside, regulars frequently return to Yin Yue for its authentic Chinese dishes. Ena’s Caribbean Kitchen attracted the attention of famous chef Guy Fieri with its jerk chicken. The local staple was featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives in 2017. Residents also frequent the eatery for its oxtail and red snapper platters.Revamped community centers and plans for expansive trail
Locals can take advantage of the playground, boxing center and weight room at Douglas Community Center. During the summer, the pool gets packed with people of all ages. “There’s also a plan that’s moving forward to build the Linden Green Line near that community center,” says Hamrick. “The plan is for it to stretch around 7 miles along an old abandoned railroad.” The linear park will only be about 80 feet wide but will allow locals to stretch their legs and enjoy other parts of the city. Linden Community Center in North Linden reopened in 2021 at nearly double the size of the building it replaced. The $20 million project was part of the One Linden Community Plan. The recreation hub spanning 55,000 square feet features an indoor basketball court, fitness room and elevated walking track. The neighborhood does not have a grocery store, so to supplement that, a mobile farmers market called the Veggie Van visits the community center each Thursday to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to residents. An outdoor park adjacent to the center offers a playground for kids in the area, tennis courts, a walking path and a fish-stocked pond.South Linden bordered by Ohio Fairgrounds
South Linden is bordered to the east by one of the city’s mightiest attractions: the Ohio Expo Center & State Fair. With Ferris wheels, funnel cakes, rides and attractions, it’s one of the largest state fairs in the country. It’s typically held in July and August and draws nearly 1 million people annually.
