Nostalgic turn of the century homes just a few blocks from Columbus' finest spots
Walking along the streets of Columbus’ Victorian Village can feel like passing through a wrinkle in time. The area’s distinctive range of mansions and elaborate houses have stood as a constant within the Arch City’s downtown area, even as periods of decline and revival have influenced the area since its first homes were built. “The architecture in Victorian Village is stunning,” says Cam Tirado, a public relations specialist with Experience Columbus. As the city’s visitor center and a resource for residents, Experience Columbus works with local breweries and businesses to plan pub crawls and other local engagement initiatives. For those who like the idea of being close to Columbus’ social centers but aren't crazy about apartment life, Victorian Village could be the neighborhood for them. “It’s a bit smaller than the Short North but still offers some amazing experiences,” Tirado says.
Victorian homes, classical condominiums and stately brownstones
True to its name, Victorian Village features a plethora of turn-of-the-century homes with Victorian and Queen Anne stylings, including American foursquare homes and brick-lined duplexes. Most of the area’s homes, including local landmarks like Cocoa Manor and Freshwater House, were built between the 1890s and 1920s, and the area’s classical architecture is present in small-scale condominium buildings and high-end brownstones and rowhouses. Prices can range from the $220s for one-bedroom condos up to the $900s for restored and updated three- to four-bedroom homes. Most locals in the area are renters, with only about 38% of residents owning their homes.
