Tight-knit community seeing significant revitalization
Part of Columbus’ University District, Weinland Park has seen significant urban revitalization efforts over the last decade. With established homes that have been restored alongside new apartments and mixed-use projects, “it’s becoming an upbeat, lively part of the city with a lot to offer,” says Tanya Long, president of the Weinland Park Civic Association. “It’s a thriving, tight-knit community with people from all different backgrounds. There’s a feeling of camaraderie and community. People here are truly neighbors in every sense of the word.” Thomas Hamrick, a Realtor with Keller Williams Consultants and Columbus native, adds, “The development along North High Street and in the nearby North Short district has really come a long way, so quaint local restaurants and shopping areas are within reach.”

Mix of 20th century homes, mixed-use complexes and multifamily properties
A stroll along the neighborhood’s pedestrian-friendly streets will reveal revitalized homes dating back to Weinland Park’s early 20th-century origins, including Craftsman bungalows, revival-style homes and brick rowhouses. The lowest-priced homes in the area are around $200,000, but Hamrick says, “That’s rare. Most homes in Weinland Park will be between $300,000 and $600,000.” Nearby factories once brought an influx of families to the area, and many of those former industrial sites are being redeveloped with new housing and commercial buildings. Construction is underway on a mixed-use complex with more than 300 apartments, retail space and a rooftop community space at the site of a former 3M manufacturing plant on 5th Avenue. There are also some recently developed modern homes on small lots near the district's eastern edge. “There is also a good amount of townhouses and duplexes throughout that area, and with The Ohio State University nearby, many of them are filled with students,” says Hamrick.

North High Street and South 4th Street serve as a centerpiece for Weinland Park’s dining and entertainment scene. Locals frequently whet their palate at Brothers Drake Meadery, a tasting room and occasional venue for local musicians and artists. Service Bar and Middle West Spirits, a restaurant and distillery serving hearty, Midwestern fare, is another go-to spot among Weinland Park residents. “More local restaurants sit south of Weinland Park in Italian Village like Budd Dairy Food Hall, which also has a rooftop bar,” says Hamrick. “The Jeffrey, an apartment complex, also has a makers market with crafts and vintage clothes.” The Short North arts district is just over a mile away, a local destination that attracts thousands of visitors every week to its galleries, restaurants, bars and nightlife. “The Short North Stage has shows and musicals, and the district hosts art gallery hops on Saturday nights; there are all kinds of events in that area,” says Hamrick. For grocery essentials, there’s a Kroger off North High Street. The thoroughfare also gives residents a taste of campus life at South Campus Gateway, where they’ll find the campus bookstore and the Gateway Film Center. This nonprofit cinema premieres the latest blockbusters.
