Commerce offers a multitude of water activities
Originally established as a resort destination, Commerce Township never thought it would be a permanent home for over 40,000 residents. Commerce is a suburban township of Oakland County 32 miles northwest of Detroit. It boasts a rural environment granting access to several natural recreational activities, with the Huron River runoff flowing through its heart into several scenic lakes. “The biggest draw is its abundant inlet lakes where people can enjoy all sorts of water activities,” says Melanie Bishop, a Realtor with Max Broock Realtors with 37 years of experience. Unlike surrounding Oakland County communities, Commerce provides a peaceful escape from the sounds of the city and gives access to nature and a slower pace of life. Spanning 3,000 acres and situated along the Huron River is the Proud Lake State Recreation Area, where residents immerse themselves in the great outdoors, camping under the stars, fishing for largemouth bass, invigorating hikes, mountain biking, skiing and horseback riding.
Large homes with private piers
Commerce offers residents water-side homes nestled along North and South Commerce Lakes, Lake Sherwood, Lower Straits Lake and Long Lake. These lake-fronted homes offer private piers to park your boat and set sail in your backyard. Home styles feature everything from townhomes and upscale condos to cozy Cape Cods and contemporary Neo-traditional homes constructed with stone and brick masonry. Central features include driveways, attached garages, and back patios, though you won’t find many sidewalks as this is a car-dependent community. Prices range from $250,000 for a cozy two-bedroom bungalow to a custom-built retreat with over 5 bedrooms, reaching upwards to 1 million. “It is popular because it has many newer houses at more affordable prices, with lots of construction and development happening," Bishop says.

Boating, golfing and nature trails
After school, head to Dodge Park, popular for its rainbow Scarlet’s Playground, designed with accessibility in mind, featuring sensory-friendly equipment, rubber mulch and shade. The Dodge Park walking path comes alive with residents for Trail or Treat, with food trucks and loads of sweets. The city obtained Wise Woods Park in 2012 and is named after the road that borders it. The park is a hotspot for wildlife, ecosystems and meandering trails where residents come to walk their dogs, cycle or jog. On the northeast corner of 14 Mile Road, you’ll discover Robert H. Long Nature Park, home to songbirds, swans and butterflies. The Bay Pointe Golf Club is where golf lovers find solace among the rolling greens and picturesque terrain.
