Commerce is a college town, and it's growing fast, but locals say it still feels peaceful for now. "It's a good place to live. A lot of houses are going up. The city's trying to get businesses in, and we have an exceptional fire department," says Dewayne Evans, the owner of Mckay's Country Kitchen, the only breakfast and lunch spot in town. Evans says that while many college students from Texas A&M University-Commerce make their home here, the town's still mostly quiet. "You can feel it a bit when school is out, but they mostly stay on the campus." Commerce is along the Texas Blackland Prairies, a stretch of fertile farm and ranch lands that helped spur growth in the late 1800s. The thriving economic activity in its early days gave the city its name. Around 9,000 people live here today, and Commerce's population has grown by 14.2% since 2000. Aside from being known for its small-town feeling, the city's claim to fame is "Big Max," Texas' second-largest bois d'arc tree.

Original red brick streets in Downtown Commerce
"Downtown, we have a cute coffee shop called Mugs – it's on Main Street where my shop is," says The Shop owner Kassidy Hernandez. "Right next to it, there's a women's clothing boutique," she says. "We have some drink and food places, like Cork and Brew, a wine bar, and Too Good! Treats ice cream shop," she adds. As locals walk the original red brick streets, they pop into McKay's Country Kitchen and say hi to Evans. "We know what they want and how they want it. They don't change much," he says. His homemade onion rings are a local favorite. Though many stores are vacant, Hernandez says entrepreneurs are buying the empty spaces.

Gathering at the Bois d'Arc Bash
The square in the middle of downtown plays hosts the Bois d'Arc Bash in September, an annual event celebrating Commerce's status as the "Bois d'Arc Capital" of the state. Residents celebrate the native tree with a parade, live music, a golf tournament and a carnival. The event has been running since 1986, and admission is free.
A new community, East Oak Creek

Fun and games at City Park
Locals toss horseshoes, grill, and picnic at City Park off Park Street. The park also has a basketball court and a dog park for adventures with furry friends. Centennial Park, off the same street just over a mile north, is home to a skate park and a 9-hole disc golf course. The park also houses the Eddie Moore Sports Complex, which features four lighted baseball and softball fields, soccer fields and batting cages. Ivy Moore Park, off Ross Street, also has a lighted baseball field and an electric pavilion.

Students are served by the Commerce Independent School District. "We drive everywhere, but the county does have bus service for the elderly, and the college has their own bus service for the college kids," Evans says. Brookshire's is on Culver Street for groceries, and Walmart Supercenter is on State Highway 50. Hernandez shares the closest retail spots for big box chains in Greenville, Texas, 14 miles away on Texas State Highway 224. Hunt Regional Emergency Medical Center is local, off Interstate 24. Dallas Love Field is a whopping 70 miles away along Interstate 30.
