Como is a lower-priced mountain getaway outside Denver
Less than 80 miles outside the Denver suburbs, the town of Como sits off U.S. Route 285 in a beautiful valley of the Colorado Rockies, south of Breckenridge. That being said, most homebuyers are interested in scenic cabins in the hills outside of town, which offer access to trails and fly-fishing creeks. The prices are an even bigger draw than the picturesque views. It's a little out of the way and very rural, so it's notably affordable for a mountain getaway outside Denver.
Low-priced mountain cabins with acreage
The mountain communities outside town, like Indian Mountain and Stagestop, offer multiacre wooded lots overlooking the surrounding meadows at a relatively low price point. "It's an affordable option for a place to get away outside the city," says Realtor Jeremy Kane with eXp, who's been selling around the Denver area for almost 15 years. "It's only about an hour from the edge of the metro area, so it's really easy." Most homes sit on an acre or two, and some properties have more than 5 acres. The smallest cabins can be found for well under $250,000, but small to midsize cabins and A-frame homes cost between the high $200,000s and high $400,000s. Larger mountain cabins with panoramic views can range from the low $500,000s to the high $700,000s. Plenty of open lots are available as well, ranging from 2 to 10 acres, selling from under $20,000 to the high $100,000s.
Access to scenic fly-fishing spots
You might think of the Colorado Rockies for skiing, but Como is mainly a warm-weather destination. "It's typically a summer place," Kane says. "Fishing is really the big deal. You have Tarryall Fishing Club with 12 miles of private riverfront." Tarryall Fishing Club is on Tarryall Creek, on the north side of the valley. Fly-fishing is the predominant sport, specifically for rainbow and brown trout. The club also has stocked ponds for the traditional spinning reel. If you own a home in the Stagestop or Lost Park Ranch communities, a portion of your HOA dues goes to a Tarryall membership, but anyone can join.
Summer hiking and winter skiing
Fishing isn't the only activity. There's tons of outdoor recreation in the summer and winter:
- Hiking is a big summer sport here, with trails throughout communities and in the surrounding meadows and mountains.
- Snowmobiling is popular on the trails after a heavy winter snowfall.
- Skiing at Breckenridge, the nearest of Colorado's world-renowned ski towns, is another popular activity.
Como is an easy drive from Denver
Como is less than 80 miles from Denver's city center, which should take under 90 minutes. Communities in the hills outside the town of Como aren't much farther away, but the drive could take longer during the winter if the mountain roads are snowed over. Weekenders typically come supplied, but if you need groceries, there's a supermarket in Fairplay, the nearest sizable town, about 10 miles south. You can also do plenty of shopping and dining in Breckenridge, about 30 miles north.
