Shadow Mountain has an outdoorsy landscape and lifestyle
Shadow Mountain is an expansive, residential community on the outskirts of Conifer, enveloped by Douglas Firs, Aspen and ponderosa trees. Country roads wind up the mountain and lead to properties with acreage. “It’s a great community close to town, but it feels like you live in a private oasis,” says Kelly Dolph, a real estate agent with Keller Williams Foothills Realty, who has been selling homes in Conifer since 2020.
Exploring the area’s mountain trails and parks
Multiple hiking and biking trails wind through the area. Three pathways lead to Maxwell Falls, ranging from half-a-mile to 4 miles. Flying J Ranch Park has a 3-mile loop that leads through forests and grassy meadows. The park is popular for picnicking and snowshoeing, in the winter. “Within a matter of minutes, you can be on a trailhead to enjoy the outdoors. It really puts outdoor activities right at your backdoor,” says Realtor Jackie White with Your Castle Real Estate, who has over 10 years of experience. About 7 miles south of Shadow Mountain is Beaver Ranch. The open space has a disc golf course and leads zipline tours.
Heading north, toward Evergreen, the Cub Creek and Bell parks have various hiking trails and picnic shelters. Dedisse Park, about 8 miles away, is a 420-acre green space with a nature center and a golf course. Evergreen Lake sits on the park’s eastern edge and allows boating and fishing.
Multistory mountain homes with diverse styles
Most homes in Shadow Mountain are located either directly off main roads, or along dirt and gravel roads. Properties are surrounded by thick trees and can sit on 1-to-35 acres. The Brook Forest subdivision is located in northern Shadow Mountain, just 8 miles from downtown Evergreen. “You can find any type of home here, from entry level starter homes to large ranches and farms,” Dolph says. “Most have wood siding to match the outdoors.” Multistory mountain homes from the 1960s to the 2000s are the primary housing type, though styles vary. Traditional, simple exteriors are common – many come with wrap-around porches and balconies. Modern mountain homes built in the 2010s and 2020s have geometric shapes and large picture windows. Prices range from $625,000 to $900,000. Cabin-inspired Craftsman estates are sprawled along the mountain and go for $830,000 to $1.1 million.
Ranch-style homes and raised ranches are also popular on Shadow Mountain and often found on a slope with raised decks. A-frame homes in the neighborhood resemble cabins. These smaller properties cost between $560,000 and $930,000.
Mountain living’s unique environment
With multiple streams flowing through the area, Shadow Mountain’s roads may be at risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. The neighborhood also may have potential risks of wildfires. “Wildfires are something you have to be aware of, but people will keep each other updated. The community is very united in that front, in mitigating the risk,” White says. Additionally, the Evergreen Fire Rescue Station 8 is located in Brook Forest, and the Elk Creek Fire Protection District has a station about 9 miles away.
Nearby shops and restaurants in Conifer and Aspen Park
Conifer Town Center is located on Conifer's Main Street with novelty stores. There are two grocery stores: Safeway and Natural Grocers. The Perk is a locally owned restaurant serving breakfast and lunch. Additionally, Aspen Park has a commercial corridor along Conifer Road, about a mile from Shadow Mountain. The Wicked Whisk Bakery specializes in homemade pastries, and Brooks Place Tavern serves classic American fare. Fast-food options include Domino’s and Wendy’s. Downtown Evergreen has an additional selection of local restaurants and shops around 8 miles north. “You’re equidistant from Conifer and Evergreen, so you can pick and choose where you want to run errands,” White says.
Getting educated in A-rated Jeffco public schools
Shadow Mountain is served by Jefferson County School District, which offers choice enrollment. Marshdale Elementary School provides before and after-school enrichment activities, and West Jefferson Middle has an Outdoor Lab program. From there, students can attend Conifer High School, which has an Engineering Department and career-oriented clubs like Future Health Professionals (HOSA). All three schools earn A-minus grades from Niche.
Students living to the north, in Brook Forest, are zoned for Wilmot Elementary and Evergreen Middle School, which score A-minus grades, as well as the A-rated Evergreen High School.
Navigating Shadow Mountain’s expansive landscape by car
Traveling along Shadow Mountain’s country roads requires a vehicle. Shadow Mountain Drive and Black Mountain Drive merge and create the main thoroughfare. Access to County Highway 73, which travels north and south, is located at the base of the mountain. U.S. Highway 285 heads east about 37 miles into downtown Denver. The Denver International Airport is roughly 61 miles away.
