Oakwood
Parks are within walking distance for most
There are two popular parks in Oakwood: Whispering Oaks Park and Oakwood Park. Both are nestled in the back of subdivisions, putting them within walking distance of many residents. “It’s not that they’re private, but because they are tucked into the communities, they feel like it,” says Benson, who has lived in and sold houses throughout Coral Springs for more than 20 years. Whispering Oaks spans 6 acres in the middle of the Oakwood subdivision and is popular for its large lawn, playgrounds and access to Stranahan River. Oakwood Park is across town in The Oaks subdivision and offers similar amenities, ranging from paved walking paths along the river to a playground. The neighborhood is also only about 15 miles from major beaches like Lauderdale Beach.A mix of HOA and non-HOA subdivisions
Most homes here are contemporary- and Spanish Mission-inspired ranches built between 1979 and 1990, though there are a few multi-story Spanish Mission dwellings. Houses sit on manicured lots of up to half an acre. And while most aren’t waterfront, there are plenty with backyards that butt up to the river or its inlets. According to Benson, the river tends to serve more of an aesthetic purpose than a practical one, though residents use it for kayaking, canoeing and fishing from time to time. The neighborhood consist of three main subdivisions: Oakwood, The Oaks, and Glenoaks. All three are commonly described as having a private neighborhood feel without the gates. Oakwood is particularly sought after because it lacks HOA requirements. Homes range from $550,000 to $1 million. Condos and townhouses are less common, with two to three-bedroom units ranging from $225,000 to $336,000.Broward County Public Schools require service-learning
Oakwood is served by Broward County Public Schools, which includes Riverside Elementary School, Ramblewood Middle School and J.P. Taravella High School, all graded a B on Niche. Broward County students must complete service-learning work to develop the skills and ethical framework that comes from helping others in the community. Service learning is also a requirement to qualify for the Florida Bright Futures scholarship. A nearby public charter school option is Renaissance Charter School at Coral Springs, which serves kindergarten through eighth grade.Local dining in Cypress Wood Plaza
Shopping and dining in Oakwood are limited to a couple of standalone specialty stores and a cluster of local shops and eateries in Cypress Wood Plaza, the community’s only shopping center. One community favorite is WAAO! Restaurant & Bakery, a Latin American spot, opened in 2021 by Colombian transplant Olga Zapata. The restaurant is popular for late nights out thanks to its Friday karaoke nights and live DJ on Saturdays. Residents also rave about Fisho Sushi & Thai for its fried rice cooked to perfection and fresh sashimi. There are plenty of options for daily needs within a 2-mile radius of the neighborhood, including more than 120 retailers in The Coral Square Mall, a Publix Super Market in the Ramblewood Square shopping center, and a Walmart Neighborhood Market off Atlantic Boulevard.Annual events hosted by the city of Coral Springs
The city of Coral Springs hosts community events throughout the year, including an annual Oktoberfest celebration and a Bites-N-Sips food truck expo on the lawn of City Hall, about 4 miles away. Another major event is the city’s Juneteenth celebration. It’s at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts and includes musical and step performances and historical conversations by community leaders.Sawgrass Expressway is nearby
The neighborhood is close to Sawgrass Expressway, a toll road and major commuter thoroughfare that leads to Fort Lauderdale, about 17 miles away. Public transit is somewhat accessible, with Broward County buses picking up along Atlantic Boulevard and North University Drive on the outskirts of town. And air travel is well within reach since the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is just 26 miles away.Minimal flood risk
