A community just south of the Nueces River
Sixteen miles from downtown Corpus Christi, Calallen is an unincorporated community along the Nueces River, founded in 1910 by rancher Calvin Joseph "Cal" Allen. Today, its established suburban comforts draw people in, from highly rated neighborhood schools to relative affordability by city standards. Maire Bustamante, a Realtor of three years who works for Luxe Realty Group, says she loves it here but is admittedly biased as she grew up in the area. And while she no longer lives in Calallen, she heads back to watch the high school football games with family and friends who never left. "It's nice because it still is close to downtown, and you can access all the bigger things the city offers, but it has that small-town feel and support within the community," she says.

Less expensive than areas like South Side, Corpus Christi
Homes tend to be pricier downtown, and living in Calallen affords a slower, more spacious lifestyle. "I know in South Side, a lot of the homes are in the $300,000 range, whereas in Calallen, I can see them at $250,000, and they are just as large. Maybe they are older, but they can be remodeled," Bustamante says. "Some people don't like living near downtown because it's so busy. They like being on the outskirts." Homebuyers will find a mix of brick traditionals, custom builds and new construction here. The average build year is 2012, though properties trace back as far as the 1950s. Bustamante's clients are drawn to the area's established homes for their larger lot sizes, which are sometimes on an acre or more. She adds that newer homes tend to be architecturally uniform while older homes all look different, giving them "charm." Most homes sell in the mid-$200,000 to $300,000 range unless they are large custom builds, which are priced from the $400,000s to $600,000s. The last major hurricane to hit Corpus Christi was Harvey in 2017. Bustamante says Calallen isn't prone to flooding, but homes along the Nueces River may be more vulnerable.
It is a mostly residential neighborhood with a mix of single-family homes and apartments.
The population of Calallen is about 15,000 people.

Calallen High School is known for its football team
The Calallen Independent School District serves around 4,000 students. Depending on which street they live on, some students can also walk to the local campuses, as the schools are clustered within a 6-mile radius. Calallen Wood River Elementary School earns an A-minus on Niche, while Calallen Middle School scores a B-plus and Calallen High School earns an A-minus. Bustamante says the high school is known for its football team. "My sister has season passes, so I'll tag along with her sometimes. We run into classmates we went to school with." For higher education, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Del Mar College are convenient options, both within 30 miles.
The school was founded in 1910 in Calallen and there are about 2,000 students enrolled.

Highway 77 and Interstates 37 and 69 East flow through Calallen
Calallen offers easy access to Highway 77 and Interstates 37 and 69 East. Public transit is accessible through the Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority with stops throughout the area. However, Bustamante says most people get around by car. Church of Hope and Journey Church are right off I-69 East. And farther north and south, there are other options, including Annaville Baptist Church and St. Mary's Catholic Mission. Corpus Christi Medical Center-Northwest is in Calallen for convenient care. To catch a flight, it’s a 12-mile drive along Texas State Route 44 to Corpus Christi International Airport.

Bird-watchers, anglers and kayakers head to Hazel Bazemore Park
Calallen is dotted with pocket parks and offers an 18-hole golf course in its northern section. "Hazel Bazemore is the main park in Calallen. It's well-established,” Bustamante says. “As a kid, we went to the beach every Sunday. You can take your vehicle out, park on the sand and be there all day." Hazel Bazemore is large, at over 70 acres, and stretches out along the Nueces River, making it popular with local kayakers and anglers. As several major fly zones converge at Hazel Bazemore, it's also a well-known bird-watching area and accommodates hobbyists with its observation deck. The beach is less than 20 miles east.

Locals support small businesses in Calallen
"I would say a lot of people do tend to shop locally and support local," Bustamante says. Mike Cotten's Barbecue is among the most popular hometown eateries. Located on Northwest Boulevard, it's a go-to for ribs, brisket and smoked turkey with a side of beans. As for local shopping, Bustamante recommends a few boutiques, including the women's clothing stores Sass and Glitz, on that same stretch, and 2 Jewels, in Five Points Shopping Center. Five Points is next to I-69 East and also houses national chains from Five Below to Big Lots to Whataburger and Wingstop. Walmart Supercenter is just south of there for groceries. Railroad Seafood and Brewery is another favorite for Calallen residents. "That place is always packed," Bustamante says. "It's a newer restaurant that opened, and it's out towards Robstown, but it's still very close to Calallen – maybe 5 minutes." La Palmera Mall, while over 20 miles east, is the largest shopping center in the city.

Neighbors gather at Calallen Market Days
Outside of heading to the high school football games, residents gather to support local businesses on Calallen Market Days, held once a month on Northwest Boulevard. “They have vendors, food trucks, you can do some shopping and get snacks. Things like that,” Bustamante says. Corpus Christi has an event scene all its own, including First Friday art walks in the downtown area.
