A small town in Ohio with strong community spirit

Over the eastern shores of Mosquito Creek Lake is Cortland, a small town in Trumbull County just over 10 miles from the Pennsylvania state line. "Cortland has that small-town, Americana feel to it," says Realtor Tyler Obradovich, team leader of the Wolf Pack Sales Team at Keller Williams Chervenic Realty. Obradovich was born and raised in the neighboring town of Warren and has sold homes across the area for over eight years. "It's a strong community where everyone knows everyone. There are a lot of community events where everyone gets together. One of the most popular is the Cortland Community Street Fair."

Established homes from the 1970s

Cortland's housing stock was fully fleshed out in the 1970s, with most build dates dating back to the late '60s and early '70s. Homeowners mostly live in roomy, traditional colonials and split levels with an average of 2,000 square feet and four bedrooms. Ample ranch-styles are in the mix, often with 1,200 square feet and at least three bedrooms. Several homes have two-car garages, small front porches and manicured front lawns. Houses mainly cost between $150,000 and $300,000. "For Trumbull County, Cortland has some of the higher price points, but they're still lower than many areas across America," Obradovich says. Cortland is a woodsy community, so mature deciduous trees line most streets and scatter most quarter-acre yards. There are few sidewalks, but locals still enjoy an evening stroll, and many roads have small light posts.

Splash pads, sledding and fun on Mosquito Creek Lake

The City of Cortland owns and maintains five parks, including Willow Park. Local athletes rally at Willow Park's pickleball and tennis courts, sand volleyball court and baseball fields. Other park amenities include woodsy nature trails, a picnic area and a playground for the kids. Pearl Park is another local favorite for outdoor recreation. During the summer, locals bring their kids to enjoy the splash pad. Plus, park-goers enjoy Pearl Park's athletic fields, playgrounds and basketball courts. While Pearl Park is a summer hit, locals head to the sled hill at Eastlake Metropark during the winter. And with Mosquito Lake bordering Cortland, locals are often on the water boating, fishing or hiking the waterfront trails.
