Furnace Woods is secluded yet connected to surrounding Cortlandt

Almost hidden amid a forest of trees, Furnace Woods is a quiet neighborhood in the Town of Cortlandt. Residents feel almost tucked away from the rest of the world among the trees. “The homes are thoughtfully spaced apart, offering a sense of privacy and tranquility — perfect for moments when you prefer a quieter, more secluded retreat,” says Wendy Phillips, a licensed real estate salesperson of Corcoran Legends with over 13 years of experience.

The secluded feel is peaceful, but residents are also close to amenities, like highly rated schools, plenty of outdoor destinations and quick routes to New York City. “You’re close to trains and activity on the Hudson,” says Maria Campanelli, an associate broker of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services River Towns Real Estate with over 37 years of experience. “It’s a great area with outdoor amenities, lots of hiking, biking and golf.”

Homes built in the 60s and 70s

Campanelli says the neighborhood has contemporary, colonial and Cape Cod homes throughout. Many houses here were built in the 1960s and 1970s, and prices often range between $675,000 and $950,000, but a few homes have sold for over $1 million due to their size. Some properties back up to a lake, and the Lakeview Homeowner’s Association offers memberships to access the lake and beach.

Trees shade homes and turn beautiful colors in the fall

Living in a forested area comes with pros and cons. Furnace Woods residents get a front-row seat for the fall colors to sweep through the valley, but that also means raking up fallen leaves and occasional tree maintenance. Summers aren’t as intense here as the rest of New York because the trees provide shade. Winters can come with below-freezing temperatures and snow.

Furnace Woods is surrounded by state and local parks

When residents want to explore the outdoors, they visit Blue Mountain Park to hike or bike the trails. The park also has a fishing pond and access to the unpaved Briarcliff-Peekskill Trailway. The trail leads 5 miles south to Croton Gorge Park, which is known for its views of the Croton Dam and for being a prime skiing and sledding spot in the winter. Anyone with young kids might visit Charles J. Cook Park to swim in the pool, run around the playground or play the nine-hole mini golf course.

“This neighborhood offers a strong sense of community and a welcoming atmosphere,” Phillips says. “It is home to a diverse range of residents, creating a vibrant and inclusive environment for all. Some examples of this are summer block parties, neighbors gathering for barbecues and waiting at the end of the cul-de-sac for Santa.”

Commuting by car or train to NYC

Commuters heading to New York City can take the 50-mile drive south on U.S. Route 9 for a trip that lasts over an hour. Many residents catch the train at the Peekskill station for a roughly hourlong ride to Grand Central Station in Midtown. “Peekskill is the first and last stop for the Hudson Line, so it’s almost like an express train,” Campanelli says. The NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital is a roughly 10-minute drive from Furnace Woods.

Dining in Peekskill and shopping at the Cortlandt Town Center

“The neighborhood is close to downtown Peekskill, which has lots of great restaurants, shops and the Paramount Hudson Valley Theater,” Campanelli says. Some of Peekskill’s most popular restaurants are near the theater, like The Peekskill Coffee House and the Iron Vine tapas bar and restaurant. Cortlandt Town Center is popular because it has stores like Walmart, HomeGoods, and Michael’s. “Town Center and the commercial corridors along Routes 6 and 202 provide a comprehensive selection of retail and essential services,” Phillips says.
