Austinburg has historic Covington homes near Mainstrasse Village
A walk along the shaded streets of Austinburg shows a Covington neighborhood with homes over a century old, situated along the Licking River. However, with a median sale price of around $200,000, single-family home prices are slightly lower than the rest of the city. Except for a few corner stores and local parks, the neighborhood is primarily residential. Mainstrasse Village is only about 2 miles away, so Austinburg residents are a short drive from restaurants, shops and events.
Victorian-era homes are in the Austinburg Historic District
Residents step out of their front doors and onto Austinburg's sidewalks. Homes from the 1800s and 1900s are close together, with most lots being 7,000 square feet or less. Victorian-era styles, such as Italianate row houses and Queen Annes, are common, as are Foursquares. An exception to these older properties is the Seneca Place development, which has energy-efficient homes built in the 2000s. Single-family residences cost $80,000 to $300,000, depending on their size and condition. Multifamily houses typically cost between $150,000 and $380,000. While several homes have undergone renovations, many of the less expensive properties do not have updated appliances. Because most of the older houses are in the Austinburg Historic District, exterior renovations must preserve the neighborhood’s character. “You can still find some really good deals in Austinburg because it’s still a work in progress,” says Realtor Lee Bledsoe with Pivot Realty, who has worked in Covington for over 20 years.
Locals dine at Mainstrasse Village and Latonia restaurants
Mainstrasse Village is the city’s main dining hub. “Covington is full of really great restaurants,” Bledsoe says. One of his recommendations is Taj Mahal Bar & Grill, which serves Indian food. Mama’s on Main is an Italian restaurant owned by the same family as the popular American bistro, Otto’s. Bledsoe says that residents also head to the neighboring Latonia for fast food. Mixed in with chains like Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken is the diner Lynna’s Grill, which made an appearance in “The Old Man & the Gun” starring Robert Redford. Residents buy fresh produce from the Covington Farmers Market, which is held every Saturday morning from May through October. They can get the rest of their groceries from Kroger or corner stores, like H&W Grocery in the neighborhood. Target is about 3 miles away, while Walmart is a 4-mile drive.
Maifest and Oktoberfest celebrate Covington’s German roots
Residents look forward to Covington events, like the annual Maifest and Oktoberfest, which celebrate the city’s German heritage. These two weekend-long events take place in the spring and fall, respectively. Both have live music, craft vendors, food and beer. “Neighbors volunteer for the different beer booths, which raise money for different neighborhood associations and things like that,” Bledsoe says. Maifest celebrates the spring with maypole dancing, while Oktoberfest’s programming includes the Stein Hoist Competition, where people lift a full glass of beer for as long as they can.
Students attend Covington Independent Schools
The neighborhood is part of the Covington Independent School District (CISD), although Kentucky’s educational choice policies allow students to apply for schools outside of their assigned district. Niche gives CISD a C-minus. Sixth District Elementary receives a C, while Holmes Middle and Holmes High have a C-minus. The high school offers dual enrollment through local institutions, like Northern Kentucky University and Bluegrass Community & Technical College. Northern Kentucky University is about 5 miles away, with over 90 majors and 22 master’s programs.
Recreation includes parks and the Licking River Greenway and Trails
Austinburg Neighborhood Park has a new playground, a repaved basketball court, pickleball courts and a dog park. There is also a playground at Clayton Meyer Park, which has access to the multiuse Licking River Greenway and Trails (LRGT). Nearly 5 miles of paved and unpaved trails go through Covington. The river’s ecosystem inspired the colorful murals along the LRGT. The Licking River flows into the Ohio River, where people go canoeing and boating. “There’s a big boating culture,” Bledsoe says. There is a canoe ramp at Covington Plaza. The Covington Branch of the Kenton County Public Library is about 2 miles away. Besides checking out books, patrons visit the Local History & Genealogy Department and borrow tools like a button maker and a laminator.
Austinburg is near Cincinnati, with options for getting around town
Locals rely on buses, cars and sidewalks to get around. “I’d say it’s a third, a third and a third,” Bledsoe says. “There are people who use public transportation in that neighborhood.” The Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky manages several bus routes that connect the neighborhood to the rest of the city. State Route 17 offers a direct route to Cincinnati, about 2 miles away. Residents fly out of the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, which is about 13 miles away, and has over 55 nonstop destinations. St. Elizabeth Healthcare Covington Hospital is about a 2-mile drive.
