Downtown Covington feels like an extension of downtown Cincinnati

Downtown Covington, which faces downtown Cincinnati across the Ohio River, puts trendy boutiques and happening restaurants within walking distance of original homes from as early as the mid-19th century. “People are drawn to the historic homes. Some have been so well preserved, like those in the Licking Riverside Historic District,” says Kim Nachazel, a Realtor with Sibcy Cline Realtors who once lived in the historic district herself. “Our first house was built in 1840. It’s hard to even fathom that.” Buses, bikes and cars constantly move between Covington and Cincinnati, keeping the steady beat of urban life that echoes throughout the neighborhood.

Nineteenth-century rowhomes, riverside cottages and modern condos

Downtown Covington encompasses some of the city’s oldest and most recognized communities. On the west side of the neighborhood, Mainstrasse Village was inspired by 19th-century German villages, while grandiose homes in the Licking Riverside Historic District on the east boast river views. Italianate rowhomes constructed around the turn of the 20th century feature intricate details on both their exteriors and interiors, and cottages come with Craftsman and Victorian touches. These homes range from $115,000 to $675,000, and many come with small outdoor living spaces in the back.
Condos are prevalent throughout the neighborhood as well, ranging from units in historic estates to a modern complex dubbed the Ascent at Roebling’s Bridge. One- to three-bedroom units fetch between $200,000 and $930,000, some with access to rooftop views. The Ascent offers 24/7 concierge service, a fitness center, a pool and a wine tasting room, which are covered by monthly homeowners association fees that fluctuate with the price of the unit. Homes near the riverfront may be at an increased risk of flooding.

Mainstrasse’s Oktoberfest Celebration

Covington’s German-inspired village wouldn’t be complete without a yearly Oktoberfest celebration. Each September, residents and visitors gather at Goebel Park for German food, Bavarian music and other entertainment, like sausage toss and stein host competitions.

Walkable downtown with favorites like Otto’s and Riverside Korean

One of downtown Covington’s main draws is its walkability. “There are lots of restaurants and things to do,” Nachazel says. “You can walk to the Bengals stadium or walk to a Reds game,” she says, referring to Cincinnati’s professional sports teams. Dozens of unique restaurants, bars and shops are tucked into historic storefronts that complement the area’s 19th-century homes. The menu at Otto’s consists of upscale New American dishes, as well as tried-and-true Southern classics, like warm cornbread and fried green tomatoes. Chandeliers and colorful accents brighten the interior, though guests can also people-watch on the restaurant’s European-style front patio. Riverside Korean Restaurant is widely regarded as one of the best in the Cincinnati area. Its authenticity is evident in recipes that have even been approved by the owner’s mother and traditional Korean-style floor seating. Groceries can be found at Dee Felice Market or UsaMex along Main Street, and more options are available farther south at Kroger.

Three bridges and several buses connect Covington and Cincinnati

Downtown Covington is about 2 miles from Cincinnati, and three bridges cross the Ohio River into Cincy. Covington’s Main Street becomes the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge as it travels across the river, and Interstate 71 makes a similar journey on the west side of the neighborhood. Perhaps the most famous bridge that connects the two cities is the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge, which served as the inspiration for the Brooklyn Bridge and was designed by the same architect. Fourth Street traverses the Licking River — a tributary of the Ohio River — and continues east into the community of Newport. “They just put a bike lane all the way down Fourth Street, and there is biking and hiking along the riverfront,” Nachazel says. Otherwise, local and express buses maintained by the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky travel to Cincinnati and the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

Goebel Park’s glockenspiel, George Rogers Clark Park’s riverfront view

Forty-three bells help tell the story of the Pied Piper every hour in Goebel Park, home to the Carroll Chimes Bell Tower. The glockenspiel clock — one of Mainstrasse Village’s most iconic features — overlooks a playground and a walking trail that connects the green space to Kenney Shields Park. Four-legged friends can play leash-free at the Kenney Shields Park dog run, which sits next to a basketball court and a playground. On the other side of downtown, the Licking Riverside Historic District surrounds George Rogers Clark Park, a pocket green space with views of downtown Cincinnati across the Ohio River. Nearby Devou Park is another popular destination for outdoor adventure, with over 700 acres of protected land and 8 miles of mountain biking trails.

Young Scholars at Holmes High study at Northern Kentucky University
