Westside blends historic charm and new amenities in Covington
Established in the mid-1800s, Westside is a Covington neighborhood that honors its historic roots while adapting to modern times. Colorful homes over a century old share the road with newer businesses like Wunderbar and Olla Taqueria Gutierrez. “It’s like a small town in a big city,” says Realtor and resident Lee Bledsoe with Pivot Realty. “It’s like living in The Village or SoHo versus Midtown or the Upper East Side. It’s laid-back, it’s funkier, and everybody gets along.” The community is less than 1 mile from boutiques and eateries in Mainstrasse Village, and less than 2 miles from downtown Cincinnati.
Homes from the 19th century cost less than the rest of Covington
Sidewalks line Westside's shaded streets. Properties dating back to the 19th century are close together, on lots with a median of 2,600 square feet. Victorian-era homes, including Italianate row houses, make up most of the residences, but there are some early-20th-century Craftsman homes and bungalows. “Property there is still a little bit cheaper than other parts of the city, so we’ve seen lots of rehabs happening in that area,” says Kaitlin Bryan, regulatory services manager and historic preservation officer with the City of Covington. “It is not in a local historic district, so people don’t have the confines of the design guidelines or need that extra layer of review when they want to make changes to their house.” The only exception is the residences in the Seminary Square Historic District. Prices generally fall between $120,000 and $390,000 for smaller homes, while larger ones cost anywhere from $430,000 to $750,000. Investment properties have sold for as little as $20,000.
Locals eat at restaurants in Westside and Mainstrasse Village
There are a handful of restaurants in Westside. Olla Taqueria Gutierrez is known for its Mexican street food and is owned by the same family as the longstanding Gutirrez Deli, which has been open for over a decade. At Wunderbar, locals enjoy a cold drink and pub food. Covington’s Mainstrasse Village, less than 1 mile away, is a hub of boutiques, bars and eateries. Bledsoe recommends Otto’s, a New American bistro serving the community for over 20 years. Juniper’s is a gin and tapas bar with live jazz every weekend. There is a Kroger in the area, and people can get fresh produce from the Covington Farmers Market every Saturday morning from May through October. Target, Home Depot and Lowe’s are all within a 5-mile drive.
Residents look forward to Maifest and Oktoberfest celebrations
Like the rest of Covington, Westside residents look forward to the annual Maifest and Oktoberfest celebrations, which highlight the city’s German roots. Maifest kicks off the summer with a wide selection of beers, craft vendors, a Maypole and live music in Goebel Park. The community comes together again in the fall for Oktoberfest, where programming includes sampling traditional German cuisine and competing in the annual Stein Hoist competition.
Students attend Covington public and private schools
Most students attend Covington Independent Schools, although the district has school choice. John G. Carlisle Elementary School receives a B-minus from Niche, while Holmes Middle School has a C-minus. The C-rated Holmes High offers dual enrollment through post-secondary schools like Northern Kentucky University. Covington Latin School is a private, Catholic institution that serves seventh through 12th grade and earns an A from Niche.
Westside has a historic cemetery near Covington’s most popular parks
Westside was designed with the Historic Linden Grove Cemetery & Arboretum in mind. “Before the cemetery was planned, that area was going to be additional residential blocks,” Bryan says. “It wasn’t weird for them to block those lots off and develop the cemetery.” People stroll among the shaded grounds with over 350 trees, the oldest of which is an almost 300-year-old White Oak. When not hosting some of the city’s biggest events, Goebel Park is a gathering place with a playground, walking trails and picnic shelters. Its main feature is the Carroll Chimes Clock Tower, which has a mechanical puppet show at the top of the hour. Devou Park, the city’s largest park at over 700 acres, is about 2 miles away. This hilly space has over 8 miles of mountain bike trails, an 18-hole public golf course and the Devou Memorial Overlook. “It has a fantastic view of the river and the city skyline,” Bledsoe says. While most parks are just outside the neighborhood, Westside residents have easy access to the Riddle-Yates Community Garden, the oldest in the city.
Westside is a pedestrian-friendly community near the interstate
Like most of Covington, Westside is a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood. Residents can also drive or take the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky buses. Interstates 71 and 75 are the neighborhood’s western border, meaning there is nonstop traffic noise. “It’s like living next to the ocean,” Bledsoe says. “It’s kind of constant, so you don’t notice it.” St. Elizabeth Healthcare Covington Hospital is in the area. The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is about 10 miles away.
