A suburban neighborhood in south central Cranston, Rhode Island, Garden Hills reaps the benefits of its proximity to Providence, as it is easily accessible by multiple highways around the area. Carole Scaralia, a 36-year Realtor with Albert Realtors, says, “Garden Hills is close to many conveniences since it’s centrally located in Cranston; there’s also no HOAs in the neighborhood.” The enclave is populated with New England suburban classic Cape Cods, ranches and split-level homes, typically with a straight driveway or attached garage.
Single-family homes in Garden Hills run for $300,000 to $600,000, depending on the square footage and age of the house. At the low end of the price range, homebuyers can get a two-bed house with 1,000 square feet, and towards the top, a three-bed, two-bath with an attached garage. Most of the homes in Garden Hills are post-World War II builds from the 1950s through the 1980s.
Cranston Public Schools serve Garden Hills youth. Several nearby options for education include Oak Lawn School and Western Hills Middle, both rated a B on Niche and Cranston High School West, rated a B-plus. Cranston High also features the Cranston Area Career and Technical Center. This academy can prepare students with skill certificates and college credits toward 16 different industry paths, from criminal justice to computer science and entrepreneurship.
Brayton Park has several baseball diamonds, a playground for kids and a few benches. A stone's throw away from Brayton is is 42 Hilltop Park, which has a playground and expansive green field to play fetch with dogs or organize a game of two-hand touch football. North of the neighborhood, Meshanticut State Park features a lake and a small loop trail where people can hike or fish for largemouth bass and chain pickerel.
Oaklawn Avenue, one of the main streets in Garden Hills, is full of restaurants and other small businesses on either side, from DeLuise Bakery and their homemade whipped cream and pastries to family-owned Campanella’s, an Italian restaurant that has been serving grilled pizzas, lasagna and subs since 1997. Warwick Mall is a 6-minute drive south and features Target, Macy’s and JCPenney. And on rainy days, residents can head to Apple Cinemas Warwick Mall to catch a movie. Garden Hills Fruit & Deli is a mini market in the neighborhood that sells deli sandwiches, cold cuts, fruit and dry goods.
Oaklawn Avenue also features a narrow bike lane and uniform sidewalks, with a mix of cul-de-sac and looping streets branching off for residential areas. Scaralia says, “You see bikers and walkers regularly in the neighborhood.” Garden Hills is a suburban peninsula, surrounded on most sides by highways, Interstate 295 passing to the west, and Rhode Island state Highway 37 and Rhode Island Route 2 intersecting to form the north and east borders of the neighborhood. With this infrastructure, residents can be in downtown Providence in 10 miles or Newport in 28 miles. Several RIPTA Route 30 bus stations on Oaklawn Avenue can drop residents off at Meshanticut State Park or access different parts of Cranston. Garden Hills is a commuter-friendly neighborhood in Rhode Island’s second most populous city, with retail or recreation well within reach for residents.
