New school draws in residents
The Mayfield neighborhood offers residents many of the same perks as the surrounding city of Cranston: a diverse mix of housing types, plentiful small businesses and a central location within Rhode Island. But Mayfield residents have access to one of Cranston’s freshest facilities, explains Rachel McNally, a Realtor with the Matty Patty Team at Century 21 Shoreline Properties and a Cranston resident. “Mayfield is in the Garden City Elementary School district. They just opened a state-of-the-art elementary school. That’s been drawing people.”
State-of-the-art elementary school opened in 2023
Children in Mayfield who enroll in the Cranston Public School District typically go to Garden City Elementary School, which opened in 2023 after a $50 million project to rebuild the school with high-tech infrastructure, abundant natural light and plenty of open collaboration space. In addition to the new digs, the school is well rated, earning a Niche grade of B. After fifth grade, students may advance to Western Hills Middle School, also graded a B by Niche, before taking classes at B-plus-rated Cranston High School West.

Trees and vegetation line neighborhood streets
Mayfield Avenue is the neighborhood’s central corridor, with small streets that split off and lead to small subdivisions of midcentury minimal traditional homes, as well as condo complexes. Mayfield Avenue is a two-lane road, but a heavy planting of cedars and red maples along the route blocks out the sights of traffic from the cloistered pockets of homes along the road. Many houses are without garages, but the neighborhood’s driveways and curbs are full of vehicles, indicating it’s a car-dependent community. Price tags for two-bedroom condos are likely to start in the low $200,000s, while three-bedroom single-family homes command prices from the low $300,000s to the mid-$400,000s.

Bring the kids for a day of fun at 42 Hilltop Park in Mayfield.
City park offers a variety of recreational options
On the neighborhood’s elevated north side is 42 Hilltop Park, a city greenspace where neighborhood kids can play on the swings, slides and pair of jungle gyms. Picnic tables and an open field surround the park, making it a nice spot to enjoy an outdoor meal or watch the sunrise turn the sky pink and blue. On the south end of Mayfield, a thicket of trees shades the Howard Conservation Area Canoe Launch. This is where locals who want to explore the slow-moving flatwater of the Pawtuxet River can put in their canoes or kayaks.
Eateries populate main throroughfare
Cranston’s commercial-heavy roadway Oaklawn Avenue extends into Mayfield, bringing a mix of shops and restaurants to the neighborhood. For example, chicken piccata and beef souvlaki are doled out from the counter at Athenian Deli & Restaurant. Locals craving something sweet may stop at Del’s Lemonade on Oaklawn Avenue. It’s one of many frozen lemonade stands across the state operated by the company, but this one is distinct because of the office building behind it, McNally says. “The world headquarters of Del’s Lemonade is based in this neighborhood. All summer, my kids are walking down there.” Marshall’s, CVS and Dollar Tree are a couple blocks away from Del’s Lemonade, while a location of Shaw’s Supermarkets, a New England grocery store chain, is less than a 2-mile drive from Mayfield. Residents who want a larger shopping selection, or who want to catch a movie, can head less than a mile south of the neighborhood to Warwick Mall, home to more than 80 stores.

Shopping mall hosts annual events
Mayfield is 2 miles from the Garden City Center, a 75-year-old shopping mall that rarely goes a week without putting on an event. In the fall, the mall may turn into a dog-friendly beer garden, while in the winter it transforms into Santa’s village, complete with coffee, donuts and pictures with Mr. Kringle himself.
Railroad provides quick transportation
Providence is less than 10 miles to the north, but Mayfield residents may find it just as useful to head south to Warwick. The city is home to Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport, the state’s largest airport, which is less than 3 miles from Mayfield. The airport hosts a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority rail station that can zip passengers to Boston in an hour and a half. Several Massachusetts towns serve as stops along the way, an important fact for the many locals who work in Massachusetts. “A lot of people who start their home search in Massachusetts end up in Rhode Island because it’s more affordable,” McNally says.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
