Historic homes remain
The city of Cranston has deemed a portion of the neighborhood along Wilbur Avenue the Oaklawn Village Historic District, where Dutch colonials and other homes built in the 1700s are still present. However, homebuyers are more likely to find midcentury minimal traditional houses or 1900s Cape Cod-style homes in Oaklawn. Moderate-sized yards and sidewalks are common in much of the neighborhood, but Natick Avenue on the west side of Oaklawn leads to a handful of farms. “In Cranston, we have everything: suburban, urban and rural,” McNally says. A two-bedroom home can be picked up in the low $200,000s. There’s a smattering of newer construction in Oaklawn, but a three-bedroom house built in the last decade is likely to start in the low $500,000s.Walk to parks
Residents can check out multiple parks and green spaces that are less than a mile from the neighborhood. Softball games are common sights at Brayton Park’s four softball fields, while local kids are often scaling and tight-roping along the playground’s nets and rope bridges. Down the street, locals fine-tune their golf games at Mulligan’s Island driving range. More than a golf facility, Mulligan’s Island features a miniature golf course, an adult volleyball league and batting cages.High school offers classes for different trades
Children here live in the Cranston Public School District, graded a B by Niche. Oak Lawn Elementary School stands in the neighborhood, so it’s convenient for kindergarteners through fifth graders to get to and from the school, which gets a Niche grade of B. After elementary school, students may go to Western Hills Middle School, a B-rated school about 2 miles outside Oaklawn. Teens can take classes about 2 miles north of the neighborhood at Cranston High School West, graded a B-plus. The campus is home to the school district’s Cranston Area Career and Technical Center, which offers career-specific courses such as plumbing, pre-engineering and culinary arts.Local celebrations abound
Oaklawn’s most famous annual event hasn’t just endured locally for generations; it has spread across the state. Oak Lawn Community Baptist Church in 1867 held the first May Breakfast, and 150 years later churches across Rhode Island serve community breakfasts of clam cakes and apple pie every May. The breakfast remains a big deal in Oaklawn, where servers dress in 19th-century attire and attendees gobble their way through nearly 100 apple pies in a morning. It’s not the only event locals have to look forward to, as neighborhood nonprofit Oaklawn Grange frequently organizes activities, from a Jack-O-Lantern Festival in October to a tree lighting in December.
Public transit offers quick ride to Providence
Rhode Island Public Transit Authority buses make stops on Oaklawn Avenue, so residents who want to ride to Providence can step on and reach the capital city in less than half an hour. Of course, locals also may drive their cars to Providence, which is less than 15 miles from Oaklawn. Providence is the state’s biggest employment center, so quick access to Providence is key for locals. Interstate 295 runs right through the neighborhood, and it’s a useful roadway for residents who work in Massachusetts, which is less than 25 miles away.Oaklawn Avenue has it all
Residents in search of a meal or a snack have plenty of options along the 1-mile stretch of Oaklawn Avenue that extends through the neighborhood. “There are so many great bakeries, restaurants and delis there,” says Realtor Rachel McNally. An agent with the Matty Patty Team at Century 21 Shoreline Properties, McNally is also a Cranston resident. “There are pretty much all local businesses along that strip,” McNally adds. On the far northern end is Culinary Affair, an Italian restaurant with contemporary décor but classic dishes such as meatballs and chicken cutlet sandwiches. Further down the street is Garden Hills Fruit & Deli, a marketplace where shoppers can pick up fresh produce and a trimmed chicken in one stop. Clothing boutiques and florists also populate Oaklawn Avenue, but residents can find a wider range of retail options, including Shaw’s Supermarkets and T.J. Maxx, at a shopping center less than 2 miles from the neighborhood.
