The Village neighborhood offers access to Providence

Village is a residential Rhode Island community on the outskirts of Providence. The long-dormant Cranston Print Works lies on the west side, and the neighborhood’s history is reflected in its century-old homes. Village housed many workers during the textile mill’s prime in the 1900s. Today, plans are in place to convert the spaces into apartments and storage units. “The Cranston Print Works is a big revitalization for that area, so they’re working to bring that up,” says Rachel McNally, a Realtor with Real Broker LLC.

Village also offers easy access to the general Providence area, ranging from eclectic dining spots to other Cranston landmarks. “It has the same kind of Italian-American roots that a lot of parts of Cranston have,” says Matthew Patty, a real estate broker with Real Broker LLC and the founder of Real Vision Properties. “There are a lot of great little pubs and homey restaurants. It’s close to a lot of the stuff that a lot of people like to do in Cranston … and you’re going to see a slightly better bang for your buck on real estate prices over there.”

Century-old homes line Rhode Island streets

The Village neighborhood is mostly residential, with single-family and multi-family homes along gridded streets lined with sidewalks. “There are a lot of single-family homes, but also a lot of older homes that are the duplex mill-home style,” McNally says. Most homes, particularly the duplexes, were built before 1925 and had ties to the mill industry. Single-family homes are often ranch-style properties or bungalows. Both housing styles typically sell for between $350,000 and $600,000.

Kids can join Thunderbolts athletics at Cranston High School East

Students in Village are typically enrolled in Cranston Public Schools, which earns a B rating from Niche. The Arlington School and Hugh B. Bain Middle School each earn a C. Cranston High School East receives a B-minus. The high school was the first in Cranston and offers sports like cross country in the fall, ice hockey in the winter and unified basketball in the spring. The teams play under the “Thunderbolts” moniker.

Indoor and outdoor recreation in Village

In northern Village, residents can fish at Cranston Print Works Pond, play baseball at Calise Field or be a part of the Cranston Street Hockey League at an adjacent rink. Parque Cranston offers baseball, soccer and football fields in southeastern Village. Cooney Playground has play equipment, trails and a splash pad. Washington Secondary Rail Trail runs through the neighborhood, a bike path stretching for nearly 20 miles between Cranston and Coventry. The Pocasset River is popular for fishing and paddling. In the southeast corner, the Cranston YMCA offers an indoor pool, a gym, fitness programs and more.

Local eateries line Cranston Street and Dyer Avenue

Cranston Street runs through central Village and includes several restaurants. McShawn’s Pub has outdoor seating and pours cocktails, and Dee’s Deli offers sandwiches. Greg’s Breakfast & Lunch serves food alongside Merlino’s Pizzeria on Dyer Avenue. Thai Star Restaurant and Betty’s Pub & Chinese Restaurant prepare international fare. Less than a mile from central Village, Cranston Parkade is the area’s main shopping center. “They have a little bit of everything there,” McNally says. “It’s convenient.” The mall has Burlington and Stop & Shop across the street from Lowe’s. Shoppers can also head to Aldi nearby or Walmart about 5 miles southeast in Warwick.

The Sprague Mansion hosts area events

The Governor William Sprague Mansion, on Cranston Street, was home to partners of the Cranston Print Works. It was built in 1790 and became the birthplace of two state governors. The Cranston Historical Society offers tours, and the home also serves as a spot for annual events like Halloween parties. “They do holiday events, concerts and a community Christmas tree lighting,” McNally says. The St. Mary’s Feast has taken place annually for 120 years to the south of Village, complete with food vendors, carnival rides and a road race.

Highway access to either side of Village

Central Village is less than 4 miles from Interstates 95 and 295. The center of Providence is less than 5 miles away. “It’s an easy commute to Providence if people are working in that area,” McNally says. Rhode Island Public Transit Authority has bus stops along Cranston Street and Dyer Avenue. Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport sits less than 10 miles south. Roger Williams Medical Center is around 5 miles northwest.
