Western Cranston

Mixture of new construction and planned developments
Western Cranston includes a mix of new construction and homes built in the 60s and 70s. A three-bedroom home might carry a $550,000 price tag, while a brand-new, four-bedroom home in a planned development may cost close to $1 million. “It’s a more sprawling area. There’s more space between houses, and it feels more private, and more rural,” says Gina Howarth with RE/MAX 1st Choice, who has been working in the Cranston area for 20 years. “Homes there are on well water, and there’s a horse farm and some agricultural farms.”High school rivalries between east and west
Athletics are central to the local high school culture, with Cranston High School West being ranked 7th out of 65 public high schools in Rhode Island for athletics and given a B-plus overall grade from Niche. The classic east vs. west rivalry between Cranston High School West and Cranston High School East makes for lively autumn games when residents turn out to see the two schools compete. Younger students attend Orchard Farms Elementary School, which is rated B by Niche, and Hope Highlands Middle School, rated B-plus by Niche.Connector to Providence and 12 miles from trains
Interstate 295, also known as the Providence Beltway, is a major connector to metropolitan regions like Providence and Warwick. The nearest hospital, Kent County Memorial Hospital, is located about 7 miles from the heart of Western Cranston. Residents can take the Lincoln Avenue Freeway 7 miles to the T.F. Green International Airport, or travel the 12 miles on Interstate 95 North to the Providence Amtrak station.Farms, family-owned businesses and four miles to the mall
Within the community, there’s a sense of loyalty to the local businesses and farms. “You go to the same place, probably Rossi’s Tree Farm, to get your Christmas tree every year. You’re going to go to Pippin Orchards to get your apples.” Residents who want to get their hands dirty in their own garden can visit Confreda Greenhouses and Farms, located in the town of Hope just southwest of Comstock Gardens. The family-owned business is part of one of the oldest and largest commercial vegetable farms in the state of Rhode Island. Autumn afternoons can be spent among the trees at Pippin Orchards, a 17-acre farm that grows a variety of apples, from Macintosh to red delicious. The Warwick Mall, located 4 miles south of Western Cranston includes standard department stores like Macy’s and JC Penney, as well as a Nordstrom Rack, a Target and Apple Cinemas movie theater. The Garden City shopping center, 5 miles northeast, was originally built in the 50s but has been renovated and stocked with modern outlets like Lululemon and Jos. A. Bank. Residents will have to cross Interstate 295 to get to the biggest variety of dining options. Once there, however, they can choose from the classic New England chain 99 Restaurants for continental cuisine and Rhode Island staples like lobster rolls. Campenella’s Italian Cuisine serves up the classic Italian favorites including house creations like the chicken artichoke delight pizza with chicken tenders, artichoke hearts and black olives.Hiking to a trout-filled lake
West of Cranston, John L. Curran State Park provides hiking trails through a pine forest and access to the trout-stocked John L. Curran Upper Reservoir where visitors can launch their boats for an afternoon of fishing. During the summer, locals make the 20-minute drive to Rhode Island’s beaches for swimming and sun or travel the 9 miles east to Roger Williams Park. The park includes a zoo, a bike park, playgrounds and miles of walking trails. On the weekends, the John H Chafee Athletic & Recreation Complex fills with young athletes and their families. The Cranston League for Cranston’s Future organizes youth sports programs for everything from pickleball to basketball and manages a community center that houses meeting rooms and gymnasiums open for public rental.
