Growing Wakulla County retains a small-town feel

Tucked between Tallahassee to the north and sandy beaches to the south, Crawfordville is country living on the go. The seat of Wakulla County, this small town is the kind of place where volunteers set up blessing boxes and replenish them daily with nonperishables. A stately county courthouse anchors the quaint downtown. And shutterbugs seek out quirky attractions like the semi-circle of vintage Ford cars and trucks permanently parked off Scenic Highway 319. “We’re growing pretty rapidly, but you still have that rural community character here,” says Heather Bryan, Executive Director for Wakulla County Chamber of Commerce. “You still know people when you walk into the grocery store, and you're friends with neighbors, because we’re the kind of community that’s always very ready to help. Multiple organizations here will step up to fill a void or make things happen.”

New Publix, popular favorites

Highway 319, also known as Crawfordville Highway, is a busy commercial corridor running north-south through town, linking Tallahassee to the north with Highway 98 to the south. Fast food outposts and a few independent restaurants, including Osaka Hibachi Sushi, border the highway as does a Walmart Supercenter. A new Publix opened along the highway in 2022. Several restaurants and businesses occupy the Winn-Dixie Shopping Center in the center of Crawfordville. The nearby BW’s Grill is the go-to for patty melts, meatloaf and fried chicken. Neighbors of BW’s include Beall’s clothing store and the Crawfordville Pharmacy. For deliciously prepared seafood, locals will make the 12-mile drive south to Posy’s Steam Room & Oyster Bar in Panacea.

Home include ranch-style, modern farmhouse and contemporary Craftsman

New and existing homes here tend to be more affordable than homes closer to Tallahassee center. Homes in gated communities typically have large lots and long, wide driveways. Mid-sized brick-and-siding ranch-style homes, often with mature trees, are commonly seen in established neighborhoods and start at $165,000. Rows of single levels line up along sidewalks in communities that offer clubhouse and pool amenities for around $300,000 while brand new farmhouse-style homes in downtown Crawfordville list for $375,000. Larger multi-gabled contemporary Craftsman styles with manicured lawns may sell for a high of $540,000. Condos and townhomes range from $195,000 for a three-bedroom townhome built in 2005 to $239,0000 for a three-bedroom townhome built in 2024.

Azalea Park is a popular spot for walking

A popular walking trail – complete with a rubberized surface – loops around Azalea Park under the shade of soaring trees. The park also has picnic tables and exercise equipment, and it’s open 24/7. The green space beside Panacea Community Center has a walking trail and a fishing pier, says Dolly Mitchell, the Park Facilities Coordinator for Wakulla County. It also has a playground and a beach. Potential homebuyers sometimes park their RVs at Newport Park and Campground and use it as a basecamp while they check out houses. “It’s really nice,” says Mitchell and “a huge wildlife refuge is across from the campground. It’s a birdwatcher’s paradise. It has a lighthouse, alligators. It’s beautiful.” Numerous hiking trails ribbon through St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge.

Plans are underway for renovations at Wakulla High

Public schools are part of the Wakulla County School District, which Niche gives a B grade. One school pathway begins at Riversink Elementary, which earns a B-plus from Niche. Students at Riversprings Middle can enroll in the Advanced Via Individual Determination (AVID) program. Riversprings earns a Niche B grade as does Wakulla High. Wakulla High serves nearly 1,500 students and is the only public four-year high school in Wakulla County. Plans are underway to expand and remodel the high school to better equip their vocational training specialties, rebuild the gym and auditorium and improve accessibility.

Hudson Park hosts Small Business Saturdays

Crawfordville parks host community events throughout the year. “We have a lot of festivals and parades in Crawfordville, and we also have events like Small Business Saturday in Hudson Park, where vendors who create artisanal and homemade items gather so that locals can discover and shop. There’s no lack of community involvement in Crawfordville,” says Bryan. Hudson Park, updated in 2023 with cobblestone pavers and new landscaping, is also the site of the Outdoor Wakulla Living Expo, an October event that showcases the county’s various outdoor activities.

StarMetro stop are closer to Tallahassee

Public transit isn’t readily available in Crawfordville, but StarMetro stops are found further north on 319 closer to Tallahassee. Many residents commute to Tallahassee, which is 18 miles north. The Tallahassee International Airport is less than 20 miles from home. As Bryan says, “not only do we have access to both fresh and saltwater, you’re just 30 minutes from Tallahassee, so big hospitals and downtown shopping are readily available. But, if you want to, you can also live in a very secluded part of town without many houses around you.”
