Crossville is a small rural town of roughly 12,000 residents atop the Cumberland Plateau. Coined the Golf Capital of Tennessee, this city is known for its lush golf courses, natural resources and strong community pride. While it's the county seat of Cumberland County, it maintains a "know your neighbor" vibe and a deep southern culture.
"What I tell [a buyer] is they need to come here and experience for themselves," says Genelle Thomas, Realtor with Better Homes and Garden Real Estate Gwin Realty. "People get here and talk to the locals and realize they love it here."
There are career paths in manufacturing and retail, but the job market has limited opportunity and slow growth. This makes Crossville a hot spot for retirees. However, young families also take advantage of the affordable housing options while commuting to Knoxville or Cookeville for work.
Crossville is known as the golf capital of Tennessee.
There are eight golf courses that dot the landscape of Crossville.

State parks and eight golf courses
Thomas says the dozens of parks in and around Crossville are one of her favorite things about living there. Cumberland Mountain State Park is a popular destination for residents and tourists alike. Known as the “Niagara of the South,” the 1,720-acre greenspace is a destination for hiking, biking, fishing, swimming and picnicking. It’s also home to Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain Golf. In total, there are eight golf courses in Tennessee’s Golf Capital.

Big city talent and annual events
Downtown Crossville offers entertainment options, including Woodmere Skating Center and the historic Palace Theatre. Near Lake Holiday, Cumberland County Playhouse hosts various music acts and plays. “We have some amazing talent,” Thomas says. “People, after they move here, they're just amazed because they see some amazing talent you usually find in big cities like New York.”
Residents gather to watch their neighbors compete to the finish line at Crossville Dragway and Crossville Speedway on the city’s northern edge. Cumberland County Fair Grounds is also in Crossville and offers carnival rides, games, live music and fair foods. Crossville hosts various seasonal events throughout the year, including music in the park during the summer months, fall’s Applefest and more.

Shopping on North Main Street
North Main Street is the town’s shopping and dining hub and home to small and large businesses. Plazas and strip malls on the northern end house big box stores and groceries for everyday essentials. The southern side is lined with small, locally owned shops and restaurants, including bars and coffee shops. The typical American pubs and pizza shops are the most common restaurants in Crossville. When not on North Main, residents head to the Cumberland County Farmers’ Market to load up on fresh produce during the harvest season.

Crossville is a buyer’s housing market
Ranch-style homes dominate the residential landscape, lining the blocks at the heart of town. Outliers range from townhouses to organized developments to sprawling estates on several acres towards the city limits. Crossville is primarily a buyer’s market, with homes generally selling for less and spending longer on the market - 59 days on average, compared to the US average of 45 days. They also often sell for under asking, bucking national trends, with the median sale price being around $354,000.
Crossville is home to a variety of housing styles including larger traditional style homes.
Ranch style homes can be found all over Crossville.

Cumberland County Schools and community colleges
Crossville students attend schools within the Cumberland County School District, which earns a B rating from Niche. The city has nine kindergarten through eighth-grade schools and three high schools, including the alternative Phoenix School. Crossville is home to three private education options, including an all-boys alternative school. Crossville is also home to Tennessee College of Applied Technology, a trade school with an A-minus rating that ranks it the fourth-best community college in the state. Roane State Community College is just 4 miles northeast of the trade school and has not been rated on Niche.
Cumberland County High School offers education to students in grades 9-12.
Glenn Martin Elementary offers education to students in grades K-8.

Where the roads cross
Crossville earns its name from the major highways that intersect in the city. U.S. 70, Elmore Road, Interstate Drive, Interstate 40 and Main Street, also known as U.S. 127, are major commute options throughout Tennessee. Cookeville is just 35 miles east of Crossville, so many residents commute there for work rather than Chattanooga, roughly 85 miles south, or Nashville, around 110 miles east. There aren’t many paved sidewalks in Crossville and no public transportation, so driving is the most efficient way to commute.
Higher than average crime rates and moderate weather
Crossville averages higher violent crimes per capita than the US and the state of Tennessee. In 2022, Crossville reported a violent crime rate that was about twice the national rate and a property crime rate that was about 1.5 times higher.
While the city experiences all four seasons, Thomas describes them as mild. “It hardly ever drops below freezing in the winter, and summers don’t get too hot; it’s usually about 80 degrees,” she says. According to Augurisk, this city is at moderate risk for flooding and earthquakes.
