A slow-paced life in the Blue Ridge Mountains
Tuckasegee, a community in North Carolina, has a few spelling variations, but most agree that the term comes from a Cherokee word meaning "place of the turtle." The verdant area sits within the Blue Ridge Mountains, with an elevation of around 2,100 feet. The Tuckasegee River, known locally as the "Tuck," winds through the community. The area attracts those looking to live in the countryside with lower property taxes. "Our tax base has been very reasonable here, an estimated half [of North Carolina's average property rate]," says Patricia Stanberry, a Jackson County Chamber Ambassador, as well as the broker and owner of Apple Realty LLC. "But they are revamping everything in Jackson [County] too. They've gone up on our tax base and adjusted the millage."

Tuckasegee has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, much lower than the national average of 4. Jackson County isn't usually known for major earthquakes, but communities in the Blue Ridge Mountains can experience frequent seismic activity.
Trout fishing and kayaking on the Tuckasegee River
The "Tuck" is a favorite local river for fishing, canoeing and tubing. The waterway contains stone fishing weirs constructed by the indigenous Cherokee tribes in the region. The river is home to several varieties of trout, bass and catfish. Locals access the Tuckasegee River from many locations around the area, such off Shook Cove Road and Highway 107. East LaPorte River Access Park has a sand volleyball court and a play area. There are also multiple preserves and natural areas in the surrounding region. "Panthertown Valley is this huge conservation area [about 16 miles away] with all sorts of waterfalls and hiking trails. It's also horse-friendly," says Nancy Warriner, a region local and broker with Allen Tate Company Highlands.
