Wooded lots and apple-picking just 15 miles from Providence
Arnold Mills isn’t the average suburb. The community features farms and apple orchards less than 15 miles from major metropolitan centers. This little nook in the northeast corner of Rhode Island where it meets the Massachusetts border, was first settled in 1734 as a mill village. Nowadays, it consists largely of families and commuters to Providence, Attleboro and Boston, but the neighborhood still has a laidback, almost rural vibe. “It’s got the feel of a small town where everyone is friendly and nice, while also being close to major cities,” says Tricia Coury, Realtor with The Coury Team. She and her family live in the neighborhood, and she loves the benefits Arnold Mills affords its residents. “People here feel like they’re truly in a tight community with their neighbors, but it's still very close to Providence and only 40 minutes to the Boston area.” Shopping centers are close by, with access to Interstate 295 in the neighborhood making for straightforward travel.

Mid-20th century Colonial Revivals and Cape Cods
Wooded, winding streets along gentle hillsides comprise the landscape of Arnold Hills. It’s marked by greenery, with homes on grassy lots surrounded by old-growth trees. Most homes in the area were built between the 1950s and the ‘70s, coming in typical New England styles such as Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals alongside some sprawling ranch-style homes. New Traditional and new construction houses from the 2000s to today can also occasionally be found here. While home prices typically start around $450,000 and can climb to around $900,000, estate-style homes on multiple acres of land can list between $1 million and $1.3 million. A handful of townhouses in the southern part of the neighborhood are priced between $300,000 and $400,000. Apple-picking at Phantom Farms, plus wineries and breweries
The shopping and dining in Arnold Mills skew more rural than most densely populated suburbs. Residents are just down the street from Phantom Farms, a tucked-away apple orchard that’s been baking up its famous apple muffins and pies since 1950. “It’s a beloved attraction in Arnold Mills,” Coury says. “They have pumpkin and apple picking, but also amazing meals and pastries.” The farm is just down the street from Diamond Hill Vineyards, a family owned winery where patrons can sample wine flights on the front porch of an old farmhouse. Those who prefer draft pints head down to Ravenous Brewing Company, which occupies a rustic industrial space with food trucks parked out back. Stores such as Target, Lowe’s Home Improvement and Walmart Supercenter are 5 miles across the Massachusetts border near Emerald Square Mall. Groceries are even closer at Dave’s Fresh Marketplace in Cumberland.

Hiking trails at the Monastery and Diamond Hill Park
Northern Rhode Island is full of forests and creeks, and there are plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors in Arnold Mills. The Monastery is one of Cumberland’s most notable attractions, comprising a library, a playground and a network of trails on the grounds of a former Trappist abbey. The site, which dates back to 1902, has spawned local legends of hauntings and ghostly monks, but is better-known today for its dog-friendly hiking paths near the neighborhood. For bit more challenging trek, folks head to Diamond Hill Park to scale its 350-foot slope, which was once part of a ski area. On clear days, Boston is visible in the distance from atop the hill. The park also has athletic fields and is the site of CumberlandFest, the annual summer celebration that brings carnival rides, fried food and fireworks to the town green. Right across from the park is the Ice Cream Machine, a must-do pit stop after visiting the park for many Arnold Mills residents.
