An out-of-the-way community near the Rhode Island-Massachusetts border
In the far northeast corner of Rhode Island lies North Cumberland, a remote, wooded area in a typical New England suburb. The dense forests provide a buffer of privacy between spacious homes and along the curving, one-lane roads. “Cumberland is pretty suburban to the south, but North Cumberland is actually sort of rural. There’s a lot more room up there, so you’ll see some big houses,” says Katie Jablonski, an Outreach Services Coordinator with the Cumberland Public Library who was born and raised in the area. “It’s also practically on the Massachusetts border. It’s near Wrentham, a nice area where the outlet mall is.” Situated between Providence and the farthest suburbs of Boston, North Cumberland is ideally located for commuters who want a wooded hideaway to come home to.

Spacious homes on forested country roads
Houses are spread out across North Cumberland along winding backroads framed by dense forests. Sometimes, homes are entirely hidden through the trees behind generous setbacks, with only mailboxes and stone fencing visible from the road. Others have neatly trimmed lawns backgrounded by outbuildings such as stables. Home styles vary widely here, as many were custom-built for the area. Late 20th-century ranch-style and split-level homes are common, alongside classic Colonial Revivals and Cape Cods. Newer homes from the 2000s onward tend to have Colonial or farmhouse-inspired flairs on New Traditional facades. This area has few suburban developments, although new construction in the Hidden Meadow development is set to bring additional luxury properties with over 3,000 square feet. Prices can range from $600,000 to $1.3 million and are largely dependent on lot size, which spans from one to three acres.

Hiking and town events at Diamond Hill Park
The streets of North Cumberland encircle Diamond Hill Reservoir, which sits just on the edge of Diamond Hill Park. “That park gets a lot of attention,” Jablonski says. “It used to be a ski area, and now you can hike up the hill.” From atop the park’s hill, hikers may catch a glimpse of Boston in the distance when the sky is clear. Down below is a spacious town green used to host events, including Halloween haunts during 13th World and family friendly fun and live music at CumberlandFest. “During 13th World, they transform the trails with these walls and tarping, it’s very popular,” Jablonski says. “And at CumberlandFest they have lots of carnival rides, food vendors and booths with games. It’s probably the biggest event of the year.” East of the neighborhood, just across the Massachusetts border, lies the rolling greens of Wentworth Hills Country Club. The public 18-hole golf course surrounds a quaint Tudor Revival clubhouse, with pickleball courts available for rent. The forested area surrounding North Cumberland contains more hiking trails and even the Hawkins Woods Disc Golf Course.

Halloween festivities at Adam’s Farm and Wrentham Village Premium Outlets nearby
Right in the heart of the neighborhood is the biggest pumpkin patch in the little state of Rhode Island: Adam’s Farm. The family owned farm was founded in 1924 and has blossomed into a major autumn attraction for folks across the Providence area, featuring a 5-acre corn maze, hayrides and a petting zoo. Adam’s Farm is the most notable in the area; however, there are plenty more — this rural neighborhood has few businesses, and residents typically travel into town for shopping. Dave’s Fresh Marketplace is south of Cumberland, and Ravenous Brewing Company is a popular pitstop. The taproom is known for its flights of craft beer best enjoyed on the outdoor patio with a bite from one of the rotating local food trucks. Major shopping centers are also nearby in Massachusetts, with Wrentham Village Premium Outlets housing name-brand retailers such as Nike, Levi’s and Polo Ralph Lauren about 5 miles north. Macy’s and JCPenney anchor Emerald Square Mall less than 10 miles east, surrounded by chains like Target and Walmart.

In the northeast corner of Rhode Island, North Cumberland is within 15 to 20 miles of Providence or 40 to 50 miles of Boston. No major thoroughfares pass directly through the neighborhood, lending to its quiet feel. However, state highways 121 and 114 lie directly west, and Interstate 295 is approximately 5 miles south. While there’s no getting around this rural area without a car, the commuter rail from Boston to Providence stops in Attleboro and Mansfield, allowing residents to park and ride. Landmark Medical Center is less than 10 miles away in case of emergencies, and Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport is just south of Providence in the event of travel.
