Dale City’s seventh neighborhood has a bustling shopping corridor
In 1960, Cecil D. Hylton began developing the Woodbridge suburb of Dale City, naming each neighborhood alphabetically with ‘dale’ at the end. Glendale was one of them, getting its start in the ’70s alongside Dale City’s first shopping strips at the intersection of Dale Boulevard and Minnieville Road. Today, the area brims with grocery stores, fast-food restaurants and a few big-box retailers. And it’s this commercial convenience that draws homebuyers, according to Laura Bailey, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty, who has sold several homes in the area. “The intersection is basically the center of Dale City,” she says. “Everything you need, whether it’s restaurants or grocery stores, is barely a 5-minute drive from your front door in Glendale. And Potomac Mills is close, and that’s one of the biggest malls in Virginia, so it’s a great location.” Locals also have easy access to nearby Interstate 95 and the Dale City Commuter Lot, which hosts a weekly farmers market and Dale City’s Independence Day Parade after-party.
Split levels, ranch styles and New Traditional homes in Glendale
Sidewalks and single-family homes built between the 1970s and ‘90s line Glendale’s winding roads. Beige and white split-level homes sit on 10,000-square-foot lots, often shaded by a mature American sycamore tree. Four-bedroom red-brick ranch styles typically have backyards enclosed by wooden picket fencing. Asphalt driveways lead to two-car garages attached to 4,000-square-foot New Traditional homes with front yards covered in ornamental shrubs. Older ranch styles and split levels here can cost between $350,000 and $550,000, while New Traditional houses may sell in the $600,000 to $750,000 range. The neighborhood also has a few Colonial Revival-style townhouses going for between $330,000 and $400,000.
Glendale offers easy access to grocery stores, fast-food restaurants and Potomac Mills
At the intersection of Dale Boulevard and Minnieville Road, locals can buy groceries at Safeway or Giants and pick up food from Taco Bell or McDonald’s. Petco and GNC are a few big-box retailers in the area, while Dale City Music is a locally owned store with electric guitars hanging from the walls. Dark red booths and wood tables fill Padrino's Pizza, another local spot that has served New York-style pies and pasta dishes since the 1990s. The neighborhood is also just 4 miles west of Potomac Mills, a 1.6 million-square-foot mall with over 200 stores. Shoppers can grab a pretzel from Auntie Anne’s and walk across cream-colored-tiled floors, stopping at retailers like Adidas and Bloomingdale’s.
Recreation on the nearby Occoquan River
Hillendale Park, on the neighborhood’s northern edge, has a basketball court and a small playground atop woodchips. But Bailey says locals often drive to the Occoquan River for outdoor recreation. “If the weather is nice, people will go to parks on the water to hike and fish. Those are big weekend activities in this area." The Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge, 7 miles east of the neighborhood, has dirt and gravel paths weaving between eastern gamagrass fields and wildflower patches filled with orange daylilies and light pink milkweeds. Hikers can stop along the craggy shoreline to fish for striped bass and channel catfish. Wooden pavilions and benches dot the trail, where great blue herons and ospreys can often be seen flying above.
B grades for Prince William County Public Schools
Children can attend Minnieville Elementary School, graded a B by Niche, and Stuart M. Belville Middle School, earning a B-minus. They may continue to B-rated Gar-field High School, which offers specialty programs like culinary arts and plumbing.
The Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center has youth sports and a swimming pool
Glendale is near several indoor recreation hubs, including the Bowlero bowling alley and arcade on Dale Boulevard. Kids sit on an alphabet-printed carpet as they listen to story times held every Wednesday at the Dale City Library on the same street. The Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center is located in a red-brick building off Minnieville Road. Throughout spring, bat cracks can be heard at the baseball diamond during Dale City Little League games, and basketball dribbles fill the court inside for youth clinics. Kids can take swim lessons at the indoor lap lane swimming pool, which also hosts adult water aerobics. The center also offers personal training, hip-hop dance lessons and Pilates.
Washington D.C. is a quick commute away
Though Glendale has sidewalks, it’s a car-dependent community. Interstate 95 is 3 miles east of the neighborhood, making Washington D.C. a 30-mile drive north. The Woodbridge train station, 8 miles away, follows Amtrak’s Northeast Regional line, putting commuters at Union Station in under an hour. Several OmniRide bus stops sit along Dale Boulevard. The Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and the Dulles International Airport are both about 30 miles from the neighborhood, and Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, 5 miles east, is the closest hospital.
The Dale City Commuter Lot transforms into a farmers market on Sunday
On the weekdays, OmniRide has hourly bus rides from the commuter lot on Dale Boulevard and Gemini Way to the Woodbridge train station. Bailey says the parking lot offers more than just convenience. “It’s more like a park than a commuter lot because it’s where they have the local farmers market and their Fourth of July party.” Every Sunday, parking spaces fill with about 50 tents for the Dale City Farmers Market, held year-round. Locals can browse crates overflowing with seasonal produce and pots of perennial flowers as they sip espresso and eat Dutch doughnuts from local food trucks. Starting at Kirkdale Drive, high school marching bands, a World War II tank, and cars decorated with the American flag proceed down Dale Boulevard for the Dale City Independence Day Parade. The celebration ends in the lot with bounce houses, pony rides and fire truck tours.
