What’s in a name? When Cecil Don Hylton first started developing Dale City, he began the name of each neighborhood with a consecutive letter of the alphabet, and he ended each name with “-dale.” He began with Ashdale in the 1960s, and by the 1970s, he had made it to Kirkdale. Today, much more development has sprung up around the area, making Kirkdale a great place to look for buyers who want it all: established neighborhoods, good schools, plenty of community activities, and even within commuting distance to Washington, DC.
House hunters in Kirkdale will find single-family homes, many of which are styles like split-foyers and raised ramblers, according to Mark D. Worrilow, District Director at Fathom Realty. Most of the housing was built in the 1970s and 1980s; because of the age of the homes, says Worrilow, they’re often good options for entry-level home buyers, compared to the newer sections of Dale City where more expansive homes were built. A budget in the low-$400,000s will get you into a four-bedroom house on a lot of about a quarter of an acre; on the top end of things, a budget of about $550,000 will get you another bedroom or two and more upgraded finishes.
The Prince William County Public Schools district serves the area. Many students attend schools like Springwoods Elementary School, Stuart M. Beville Middle School, and Gar-Field High School. Gar-Field High is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme school. The IB program offers a rigorous course of study meant to provide students with the tools for lifelong learning in addition to excelling in traditional academic subjects.
One of the highlights of the area is the recreation opportunities at the 220-acre Andrew Leitch Park. Residents can walk the trails, play basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, and take the kids to the playground. What really sets it apart, though, is their waterpark. Boasting the largest splash pad in Virginia, this outdoor oasis also offers waterslides, wading pools, cabana areas and a snack bar. Another way to beat the heat is at the nearby Prince William Ice Center. Learn to play hockey, join an adult league, or just come for open skate times for some fun-spirited exercise.
The most convenient shopping to most Kirkdale homes is at Mapledale Plaza, which is anchored by a Giant grocery store. There are plenty of dining options here as well. Kabob G offers Halal food in a cozy atmosphere. Ricky’s Chicken offers dishes like Peruvian chicken, pupusas and Mexican favorites. Residents can also get to the shopping, dining, and entertainment options at Potomac Mills in about 15 minutes.
For home buyers on the hunt for an established neighborhood with approachable home prices —all within commuting distance to Washington, DC — Kirkdale just may be the Dale City for you.
