While many properties across Dale City feature similar architecture and amenities, the size of Oakdale’s homes set the neighborhood apart. Houses in the east were built in the 1970s, whereas construction in the west began 20 years later.

With more recent home construction comes accommodations for modern families. Oakdale’s colonial-style homes span 2,400 to 3,500 square feet, a notable change from 1,600-square-foot properties in older communities. Fenced-in backyards provide space for dogs to run and friends to gather, and cul-de-sacs invite neighbors to chat as they open their car doors and prepare for morning commutes. Although sidewalks don’t extend throughout the neighborhood, the lack of through traffic keeps streets quiet, allowing walkability. Whether looking for four or five bedrooms, prices in Oakdale range from $495,000 to $645,000.

Though Oakdale borders Turkey Branch and Independent Hill, the neighborhoods offer contrasting ways of life. “Dale City is a planned community. When it originated, if you will, it was far more dense, and it just is a totally different vibe, different animal, different valuation,” Kim McClary of Long and Foster explains. With a suburban feel, consistently sized lots and dead-end streets, the community focuses on building connectivity rather than a personal retreat. “If you think about Dale City and 2.35 acres, it’s not happening,” McClary continues. With the more tightly spaced housing, however, comes the benefit of accessibility. Reach retailers like Food Lion, CVS and Walgreens in less than a mile and access hundreds of retailers across Potomac Mills, Smoketown Plaza and Chesire Station, less than 8 miles away. Whether looking to get food for the dog at Petco or searching for the latest fashions at H&M, find everything you need in minutes.

Despite all the differences from one neighborhood to the next, one thing remains the same: a high-quality education. Part of Prince William County Schools, Oakdale opens doors to a district earning an A-minus rating from Niche. Students begin at Rosa Parks Elementary School before transitioning to Saunders Middle. For high school, students attend C.D. Hylton, a B+ rated school according to Niche. After the school bell sounds, let learning continue at Dale City or Chinn Library, less than 5 miles from home. Find courses for language development and career advancement hosted throughout the month.

Before the sun descends behind the trees, burn off some energy 2 miles away at Andrew Leitch Park. You won’t find a traditional playground here, but you will find a small waterpark and multiple sporting fields. Trailheads in the park also connect you to Neabsco Greenway, inviting you to wander along a wooded path that follows the creek for miles. In the winter months, glide across the ice at Prince William Ice Center, less than 3 miles away.

If you’re commuting to Washington for work, take advantage of the nearby Interstate 95 ramp by Potomac Mills and travel less than 30 miles up the highway. Find stops for Lorton, Springfield and Lincolnia along your way if you need to stop in the capital’s outlying cities. Kick up your feet in a home constructed with the people of today in mind in Oakdale.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
