One of the many ‘-dales’ in Dale City, Virginia
Silverdale is a product of the post-‘50s residential boom in Prince William County. It’s one of 17 neighborhoods in Dale City, a planned suburb about 30 miles outside of Washington, D.C. The neighborhoods were named in alphabetical order starting with Ashdale in 1960, and street names begin with the same letter. That means roads in Silverdale generally begin with the letter “S.” By the time Silverdale was built, Dale City was growing so quickly that the developer enlisted help naming streets. Realtor Cherish Green says her father worked for the developer back then and named a street after himself. “My dad’s name is Charles, so they named a street St. Charles Drive,” explains Green, a salesperson at Coldwell Banker Elite who lived in Dale City growing up. “Every Realtor who worked there got a street named after them because they were building so fast.” The neighborhood is almost entirely made up of homes, trees and lawns, providing a landscape that feels different from the development sprawling across the metro area. At the same time, Silverdale is within 10 miles of shopping and entertainment one would expect in the Washington, D.C., suburbs.
Soccer games at Howison Homestead Park
To the west of Silverdale is Howison Homestead Park. Originally settled by Revolutionary War officer Stephen Howison in the 1700s, the site is now a soccer complex. Schools and leagues use the three fields for games and practices, while others can park and utilize the facility’s picnic pavilions or playground. Between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day, locals can visit the pools and slides of Waterworks Waterpark 2 miles north. Several churches are in Silverdale, including the 60-year-old St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church. Other congregations active in the neighborhood include a Baptist church, a Seventh-Day Adventist church and a Spanish-speaking Pentecostal church. Congregation Ner Shalom, a synagogue, and Haskay Masjid are each about a mile from Silverdale.
Staples Mill Shopping Center next door
Residents live about a mile from Staples Mill Shopping Center, home to Food Lion, Minnieville Cleaners and a handful of other businesses. Among them is Armetta’s Italian Grill & Pizzeria. It’s one of three Italian restaurants in the county run by the Armetta family, who have been part of Northern Virginia’s restaurant scene since the ‘70s. Locals can access more businesses less than 3 miles away at the intersection of Dale Boulevard and Minnieville Road. Pitkin’s Ace Dale City Hardware, Dollar General and several fast-food restaurants are in the shopping centers clustered at the intersection. There’s also a Bowlero for bowling or cocktails, and Iit’s a 6-mile drive to Potomac Mills, a 200-store indoor outlet mall.
1980s homes in a suburban setting
Silverdale was one of the last Dale City neighborhoods to be developed. Colonial Revivals and split-level homes built in the 1980s stand on winding streets that usually end in cul-de-sacs. Sidewalks are common, though the neighborhood’s younger trees mean less shade for pedestrians. Lots typically span about a quarter of an acre, putting homeowners close together but granting a little breathing room thanks to modest-sized front lawns and wooded backyards. Prices vary from the low $400,000s for three-bedroom homes to the $700,000s for houses with five-plus bedrooms.
20-plus AP classes at C.D. Hylton High School
Silverdale falls within the boundaries of Prince William County Public Schools, which gets a Niche grade of A-minus. Children can attend nearby McAuliffe Elementary School, graded a B. Older students may go to Saunders Middle School and C.D. Hylton High School, both rated B-plus. Starting in 10th grade, teens at C.D. Hylton High can take any of the school’s 23 Advanced Placement courses, earning college credit simultaneously. Less than a mile outside Silverdale, students can get a private education at A-minus-rated Heritage Christian School.
Dale City Farmers Market every Sunday
Residents across the Dale City neighborhoods gather along Dale Boulevard for the annual Independence Day Parade. The Dale City Civic Association organizes the hour-long parade and the subsequent Family Day. The free event features food and games in a parking lot off Dale Boulevard, 3 miles from Silverdale. On Sundays, 50 vendors set up for the Dale City Farmers Market in the lot.
Commuters take I-95 to D.C.
People in Dale City usually travel by car, and Interstate 95 is the closest major roadway. Silverdale residents are 6 miles from the on-ramp to the interstate, which leads to Washington, D.C. The 30-mile commute can last as long as an hour and 50 minutes each way. It’s an 8-mile drive to the Amtrak station in Woodbridge, where passengers can catch trains to Washington, D.C., Baltimore and other cities along the East Coast.
