The 20-block Arts District came to life in the 1980s when Dallas organized its scattered art institutions into one centralized area in northeast downtown. The Dallas Museum of Art was the first to re-home in 1984. Over the next 20 years, it welcomed esteemed neighbors Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, Crow Collection of Asian Art and Nasher Sculpture Center, to name a few. This cultural hub is the largest art district by area in the United States with a distinct city feeling. "It's fast-paced living for sure," says Jamie Sheehan, a Realtor with Ebby Halliday and an East Dallas local. Glassy luxury condo towers with million-plus-dollar units and swanky high-rise apartment buildings are the norm here, and the vast majority of residents are renters.

Over 25,000 exhibits at The Dallas Museum of Art
The Dallas Museum of Art has over 25,000 exhibits, from modern and ancient sculptures to classic paintings by Monet and Matisse. The Crow Collection of Asian Art focuses solely on Eastern masterpieces — some collected by the museum's original founders who traveled across Asia in the 1960s. Music lovers can catch performances at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center and at Winspear Opera House. Dallas Black Dance Theatre is the oldest professional dance company in the city.
People who work or live in the Arts District are often artists themselves or have had a lifelong appreciation. "A show or exhibit is happening every day, and after work, there are great local bars and restaurants to go to," says Jayde Davis, the ticketing services supervisor at the AT&T Performing Arts Center on Flora Street. Davis is particularly interested in the center's upcoming off-Broadway shows, and it also hosts comedians and speakers like radio legend Ira Glass.

Community dances at Sammons Park
There are many community events in the Arts District, and many of them are also free. Sammons Park, a small green space at the AT&T Performing Arts Center, hosts live music on Thursdays and regular family weekends with face painting and balloon artists. At over 5 acres, Klyde Warren Park is the largest park in the Arts District. Locals can head there for yoga on the lawn, outdoor concerts and films. The Arts District Block Party, when dancers fill the streets and perform to live music, takes place in April. Nasher Sculpture Center hosts art classes the first Saturday of the month.
A large congregation gathers on Sundays at the National Shrine Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, just a block from the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. Its Gothic structure, dating back to 1902, is mirrored through the glass-clad high-rise buildings surrounding it. Less than a mile away, Thanks-Giving Square is anchored by a meditative, non-denominational chapel imbued with stained glass.

Lunch at the Dallas Museum of Art
Restaurants are located a leisurely stroll away from city highlights and often set within them. Before scoping out exhibits, locals can grab a quick lunch and wine at DMA Cafe, located at the Dallas Museum of Art's northern entrance. Or after yoga at Klyde Warren Park, they can pop over to the American bistro Sloanes Corner on Ross Avenue, right by The Crow Collection of Asian Art. The Playwright Irish Pub serves classics like fish and chips in One Arts Plaza, a mixed-used residential space. Berkley's Market sells groceries and prepared foods in Trammell Crow Center, a postmodern skyscraper with corporate offices. NorthPark Center is 6 miles away with hundreds of national retail chains.

Views from the 28-story HALL Arts
Luxury condo towers and high-end apartment buildings make up the real estate on offer and upscale amenities like fitness centers, 24-hour concierge and valet services and rooftop pools are typical. The vast majority of people rent, although, according to Sheehan, only a certain number of units can be used as rentals, which is leading to more ownership. "Usually, it takes a little bit longer to sell properties here. It's a unique buyer pool of people that can spend no less than $1 million," Sheehan says. And as amenities increase and square footage rises, prices can climb as high as $7 million. That price might include a spacious private terrace, floor-to-ceiling windows and a panoramic city view. Condos include the 28-story HALL Arts, the 24-story One Arts Plaza with three-story floor plans and the artful 42-story Museum Tower near the Meyerson Symphony Center.
