Kimball
Encompassed by the Five Mile Creek Greenbelt
Kimball is surrounded by opportunities to explore the outdoors. At the 248-acre Kiest Park, just northwest of the community, residents can practice their swing at 16 tennis courts, play volleyball or throw the ball around one of the baseball complexes. A 2-mile nature trail also encompasses the park with exercise stations, connecting the 2-mile Kiestwood Trail, allowing cyclists and hikers to explore multiple neighborhoods. And residents don’t need to travel far for a deeper escape into nature. The 300-acre Five Mile Creek Greenbelt hugs the neighborhood's northern edge, encompassing multiple parks, trails and communities. In 2023, the Texas Department of Transportation granted $6.6 million to the state’s Trust for Public Land to fund the next phase of the expansive planned greenbelt. Once complete, slated for some time in 2024, the greenbelt will connect 17 city parks, two colleges and two light rail stations. For now, residents can easily access Pecan Grove, Westhaven and Briar Gate parks. And just north of Kimball, hikers and cyclists can spend all day in the 120-acre Oak Park Cliff Nature Preserve. The refuge offers eight miles of trails through woodlands and wildflower meadows.Brick and midcentury moderns starting at $250,000
Homes in Kimball are typically brick and midcentury modern ranch-style houses with spacious, tree-covered lots. “The yards are huge,” says Miller. “The homes are not on top of each other. You’ll be close enough to get to know your neighbors but not so close that you’ll feel crowded. You’ve just got to be there to see it. It’s amazing.” The median lot size starts at 11,000 square feet and can span up to nearly 1 acre. Most homes were built in the early 1960s and range from $245,000 to $850,000. Newcomers can expect three-bedroom, 1,200-square-foot properties at the lowest price point and four-bedroom, 2,900-square-foot homes on the higher end. The neighborhood also offers condos starting at $120,000 for a one-bedroom and up to $170,000 for a three-bedroom in the Country Condos Creek subdivision. These condos come with up to $600 homeowners’ association fees and access to a pool.Home to a Netflix famous taco joint
Most shopping and dining options are at opposite ends of the neighborhood, along Keist Boulevard and Ledbetter Drive. In Kiestwood Village at the northeast edge of Kimball, residents can grab basics at Sam’s Grocery and Grill and fuel up in the morning at Peaberry Coffee, popular for its breakfast tacos, Vietnamese iced coffee and matcha Rice Krispy treats. Maskaras Mexican Grill is also in this strip mall. This eclectic eatery is decked out in framed Lucha libre prints, colorful masks, 40 collectibles dedicated to the art of Mexican wrestling and even life-sized wrestling figures adoring the shop. This tiny shop was featured on the Netflix series “Taco Chronicles” and is famous for its birria tacos, tortas ahogadas and other traditional Guadalajara fare. For more variety, the neighborhood’s laid-back Catfish Connection serves up big portions of fried shrimp, crab cakes and other seafood specialties with southern sides. Kimball’s Fiesta Mart takes care of specialty items, and Aldi sits just 2 miles north for more grocery items. Wynnewood Village is also only 4 miles east of Kimball, which offers a variety of retailers, dining and grocery options. For entertainment, Kimball residents are only a 5-mile drive from the Bishop Arts District, a thriving shopping and dining area full of locally owned boutiques, gift shops, cafes and bars. While here, residents can catch big-name country and folk music acts at the historic Kessler Theater.Championship-winning high school basketball team
