Lake Highlands
A mix of 1970s bungalows and million-dollar contemporary homes
Much of the community's development happened between the 1960s and 1970s, but recent developments bring fresh, contemporary construction to the area. Buyers will find condos costing between $125,000 and $300,000, while midcentury bungalows and ranch-style homes cost anywhere from $500,000 and $900,000, depending on the size or level of renovations. Larger contemporary or modern farmhouse-style homes can run between $1 million and $2 million. Many residential areas are quiet, oak-lined subdivisions, and homes feature good-sized backyards with pools perfect for cooling off on a warm day.Students attend Richardson Independent School District
Although Lake Highlands is in the city of Dallas, much of the area is served by the highly regarded Richardson Independent School District. “The school district is really desirable. You can live near Dallas but still have your kids in Richardson ISD,” Corbett says. In this wide-reaching area, students may start at White Rock Elementary, which has an A on Niche; Forest Ridge Elementary, which has a B-minus; Merriman Park Elementary, which has an A; or Stults Road Elementary, which also has a B-minus. For middle school, students might attend either Forest Meadow Junior High, which has a B-plus; Liberty Junior High, which has a B-minus; or Sam Tasby Middle, which has a C-plus. High schoolers might attend Conrad High, which has a B-minus; Berkner High, which has a B-plus; or Lake Highlands High, which has an A-minus. The school is highly regarded for its athletics and fine arts programs, which receive strong parent and community support.Get outdoors at White Rock Lake
Lake Highlands' abundance of recreational opportunities draws residents and visitors alike. Outdoor enthusiasts have more than 875 acres of parks and 26 miles of trails, along with ballfields and playgrounds. Lake Highlands Park offers soccer and rugby fields. B. B. Owen Park is a favorite for disc golf, while Flag Pole Hill features plenty of space for picnics. It has a scenic overlook of beloved White Rock Lake and is the not-so-secret spot for sledding on those rare wintry days. “Living near White Rock Lake is a dream here,” Corbett says. “It’s a really beautiful lake that’s popular for kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing. A lot of people want to be near the lake.”Retail and dining selections along Skillman Street
Several retail areas serve residents throughout Lake Highlands. Along Skillman Street, which runs through the center of the community, is a Target, Sprouts, LA Fitness and a few restaurants. Popular options include First Watch, a go-to for weekend brunch, and Jake's Gameday, where residents can order a basket of wings while watching the Cowboys. Play Street Museum is here, offering a place for kids to learn and play on the weekends and summer breaks. In the community's southeast corner on McCree Road are big box stores like Sam's Club, Kroger and Lowe's. Residents can also catch the latest blockbuster at the Regal Theater. When residents are seeking more, downtown Dallas is just 10 miles away. The community also hosts regular events that residents enjoy. Each spring, the Run the Highlands 5K and Family Trail Walk hosted by Lake Highlands Junior Women's League features a children's carnival full of games and activities. On the Fourth of July, the Exchange Club of Lake Highlands hosts a patriotic parade and carnival. In late November, residents kick off the holiday season at Lake Highlands Town Center for Light up the Highlands. Activities include ice skating, a visit from Santa and lighting the Christmas tree.
Easy commuting through Interstate 635
One of the biggest appeals of the area is its proximity to the city and the suburbs, as Corbett mentioned. I-635 bisects the community. It's bordered on the south by Northwest Highway and on the west by White Rock Creek or Central Expressway. Lake Highlands is about 12 miles from downtown Dallas and northern cities, such as Plano and Garland. The DART light rail system's blue line stops at the Lake Highlands Station on Whistle Stop Place. For medical treatment, Medical City Dallas Hospital is 5 miles away, just across the Central Expressway. The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is 25 miles away for travel beyond the metroplex.
