Lakewood
A variety of home styles surrounding White Rock Lake
Houses in Lakewood vary in style, and it seems as if no two houses are exactly the same. Depending on location in the neighborhood, properties can offer stunning lake views, but regardless of house location, streets are lined with old-growth trees. Sloping property lots feature Tudor homes with steep gables, compact cottages, Craftsman and Mediterranean styles and early ranch homes. More recently, homes have been torn down and replaced with estate homes, but the original architectural styles remain for the most part. Almost all the single-family homes in Lakewood are over the $1 million mark. Prices range from $1.2 million for a four-bedroom ranch, while a five-bedroom Tudor rises to $1.7 million. “Prices have appreciated here over the last five years, which sets the market. People want to live here because you are in Dallas proper, but those amenities come at a steeper price,” Black says.SchoolsJourney through the Dallas Independent School District
Lakewood children are zoned for the Dallas Independent School District, which scores a B on Niche and offers a robust school choice program. The district is divided into innovation schools, which are designed to meet the needs of the neighborhood they are near and have attendance boundaries. Transformation schools are new schools with specialized academic programming and no boundaries. The innovation schools are Lakewood Elementary, which scores an A-minus on Niche, the B-rated J.L. Long Middle and Woodrow Wilson High School. Woodrow Wilson High grades as an A-minus and offers the Woodrow Performing Arts department, which is comprised of band, choir, dance, musical and theater departments. “The community supports Woodrow Wilson’s drama department, and the spring performance is always a hot ticket,” Black says.An outdoor lifestyle in Lakewood
White Rock Lake Park is one of the most heavily used parks in the Dallas Park system. With access points to the water, it is pretty common to see rowers, paddleboards, and anglers enjoying a day on the water. Winding across the lake's perimeter is over 9 miles worth of hiking and biking trails exploring the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens on the west side of the lake. On a smaller scale, Tietze Park is an 8-acre community park that opened in 1924 and features basketball courts, a playground, a pool and tennis courts. Families can join the Lakewood Country Club, which opened in 1912 and has been transformed into the ‘cornerstone of the neighborhood.’ Members can enjoy an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, three swimming pools, a fitness center, club events, and dining options. For the weekend golfer have the Tenison Park Golf Course, a public track just south of the neighborhood.Shopping local in Lakewood
Locals have their pick of the litter when it comes to grocery shopping. Finding essentials is easy with multiple national chains such as Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Tom Thumb nearby. However, the area has more local boutiques and trendy shops like Talulah and Hess, featuring creative clothing, home goods and artwork from local artists. The restaurants have that same kind of vibe. Ten Times Cellars is a winery offering small plates and appetizers, while Petra and the Beast just opened and is a foodie’s dream, offering farm-to-fork New American cuisine. “People in Lakewood love to support local, and while chains have come to the area, people prefer to go to local businesses,” Black says.Lakewood Neighborhood Association and community events
One of Dallas's largest homeowners’ associations, the Lakewood Neighborhood Association encompasses almost 3,000 residents and is responsible for the security and beautification while hosting community events. Lakewood hosts an annual Independence Day Parade and celebration that began in 1962. The day starts with a 1.2-mile fun run before the parade at 10 a.m. Following the festivities, attendees meet at Tokalon Park for awards and refreshments. Each December, the BMW Dallas Marathon has a section of its race around the lake and neighborhood. “Some streets close, but people rally around it by setting up refreshments while cheering on the runners,” Black says.Convenient commuting to Downtown Dallas
Residents can use Interstate 30 or hop on U.S. Highway 75 to get downtown for business or pleasure. Those needing public transportation can use the Dallas Area Rapid Transit, more commonly known as DART, hop on the Blue Line at the White Rock Station or use the DART bus service available throughout the community. When it's time to get away, locals are treated to just a 7-mile drive on Mockingbird Lane and avoid the interstate, getting to the Dallas Love Field Airport.
