Old East Dallas
An active community with plenty of outdoor recreation
In addition to its more casual atmosphere, Old East Dallas draws an active population of residents who are attracted to the neighborhood’s proximity to White Rock Lake. “A lot of the neighborhood activity centers around the lake,” says Price. “People are always running, cycling or just relaxing at White Rock Lake.” The 9.4-mile path that encircles White Rock Lake is the city’s most popular trail, with several playgrounds located along the trail’s path as well as the 3-acre White Rock Lake Dog Park. The path also links to the White Rock Creek Greenbelt Trail, for those interested in longer distances. There are several small parks within the neighborhood, but the centrally located Buckner Park is a neighborhood favorite. Spanning over nine acres, the park has a playground, basketball court, tennis courts and fields for both soccer and softball. And the Santa Fe Trail runs through the neighborhood, winding for 4 miles through wooded areas and open land from White Rock Lake to Deep Ellum. The paved trail is ideal for walking, jogging or cycling.
A culinary oasis and a shopper's dream
In her YouTube channel, Price covers a lot of information about the East Dallas area in general, and she highlights some of her favorite spots in Old East Dallas. She praises the dining scene in the neighborhood, where The Porch serves up Southern comfort food in an equally comfortable setting. Tei Tei makes Price’s list of must-visit restaurants for their sushi, and Fireside Pies is the place to go for wood-fired pizza. When neighborhood residents are in the mood for old-fashioned pub grub, The Old Monk is a Dallas institution that checks all the requisite boxes for a traditional Irish tavern.Despite the array of dining options in the neighborhood, home cooks are fortunate to have Tom Thumb, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods all within a mile of the neighborhood. Target is located on the western edge of the neighborhood for home essentials, and a CVS pharmacy is in the same vicinity. And bordered as it is by both Interstate 30 and Central Expressway, Old East Dallas offers residents easy highway access to get virtually anywhere in the city.
A home for every taste
Homes in the neighborhood run the gamut from mid-century ranch-styles to new-construction contemporaries, and buyers can also choose from condominiums and townhouses. Many historic homes dating back more than a century line the quiet streets of Old East Dallas, too, and there are opportunities to purchase homes in need of replacement. The median price in the neighborhood is around $650,000, and buyers should expect to pay an average of $310 per square foot. A one-bedroom/one-bathroom condominium can sell for $80,000, and prices can go up to $2.2 million for a five-bedroom/five-bathroom colonial-style home on a 1.5-acre lot.DISD schools
Old East Dallas is districted to the Dallas Independent School District, which earns an overall rating of B from Niche. Students here can attend William Lipscomb Elementary, J. L. Long Middle and Woodrow Wilson High School. Lipscomb earns a C-plus from Niche, Long earns a B and Wilson earns an A-minus. Students at Woodrow Wilson can choose from over 20 school-sponsored clubs, and they have the opportunity to play 18 different varsity-level sports. Parents can also opt for several private schools in the area, including St. Marks’s School of Texas, which earns an A-plus from Niche.Get a little culture
Speaking of Interstate 30, just south of the neighborhood – across the interstate – is the Texas State Fairgrounds, where every fall the air fills with the scent of fried foods, the lights of the Texas Star Ferris wheel light up and the boys from Austin and Norman meet up in the Cotton Bowl for their annual college football showdown. But the fairgrounds are also home to year-round attractions like the African American Museum of Dallas and The Women’s Museum. Residents here are also close to the world-famous Dallas Museum of Art and all that downtown Dallas has to offer.
