Old Lake Highlands
White Rock Lake the hub of most activity
Newcomers flock to Old Lake Highlands for its outdoor recreation. At its heart is White Rock Lake, a favorite local spot since the 1930s. “Living near White Rock Lake is a dream here,” Corbett says. “It’s a really beautiful lake that’s popular for kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing. A lot of people want to be near the lake.” Cabins line the shore, where residents can spend weekends during the summer enjoying fun on the water. Surrounding the water, White Rock Lake Park offers a dog park, boat rentals, biking and some of the best views in the city. The park also includes the Bath House Cultural Center, fishing piers and the White Rock Lake Trail, a paved 9-mile pedestrian and bike path that circles the lake. At its southern tip, the path joins the 50-mile Loop Trail, which connects green spaces around Dallas. Flagpole Hill Park is also located on the lake and offers an obstacle course, a giant splash pad for kids and 100 acres of space to enjoy a picnic while taking in the views. Residents also enjoy the neighborhood’s Norbuck Park, a 100-acre green space with a basketball court, baseball field and wooded paths to escape into nature. Another significant draw to this neighborhood is its proximity to the award-winning Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. On the southern shore of White Rock Lake, the 66-acre oasis filled with cherry and pecan groves and rows of azaleas offers 19 named gardens, including “A Woman’s Garden,” featuring an infinity pool, sculptures, garden rooms and a sunken garden of roses. The Nancy Clements Seay Magnolia Glade is also popular, decorated with lily ponds, southern magnolias and Japanese maples.Fourt-best neighborhood to buy a home in Dallas
Niche ranked Old Lake Highlands as the fourth-best neighborhood in Dallas for buying a house. The quiet, tree-lined streets offer over 1,700 homes in a mix of architectural styles, from midcentury modern ranch-style homes to post-World War II cottages and modern estates. Most homes were built in the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s, but there are some that date as far back as 1911 and some newer construction. Homes range from $370,000 for an 800-square-foot two-bedroom to over $2 million for a five-bedroom, 4,100-square-foot custom-built property. Homes closer to the lake and newer custom builds, like those in Old Lake Highland Estates and Bel Aire subdivisions, will be on the higher end. Higher-end newer homes offer rooftop decks, lots up to a quarter acre and courtyards. Most homes have multi-car garages, lake and city skyline views, and residents can easily access a park no matter what section of the neighborhood they live in.Home to a beloved burrito and health juice spot in a gas station
Most shopping and dining options are along Buckner Boulevard and the Northwest Highway, which intersect through the neighborhood. Dallas Diner is a staple for donuts and all-day breakfast classics, and BarNone is the go-to spot for a night out to listen to live music on the patio, have a burger and enjoy craft beer. A favorite in the neighborhood is Green Spot along Buckner Boulevard. This locally owned hidden gem inside a gas station isn’t a typical convenience store. It’s famous for its breakfast burritos, locally roasted double espresso shots, homemade salsa bar and healthy juices. Lake Highlands Town Center is the nearest shopping center, 3 miles north, which offers Sprout’s Farmers Market, a pet store and Starbucks, while Whiterock Marketplace, 2 miles south of the neighborhood, offers more shopping essentials like Home Depot, Marshall’s and Dollar General. Residents can grab groceries at Casa Linda Plaza off Buckner Boulevard or Kroger on the Northwest Highway.Public and private options within the neighborhood
Dallas Independent School District serves the area, and local students can attend Victor H. Hexter Elementary, which has an A-minus Niche ranking and offers a chess club. Less than a mile down the street, students can attend Robert T. Hill Middle, which holds a C-plus, followed by Bryan Adams High School Leadership Academy. Earning a B on Niche, the high school offers an Academic Decathlon, a robotics club and golf teams. There are also private options in the area, such as the Dallas Academy, which focuses on children with memory and processing disabilities. An active neighborhood association, popular farmers market and cycling club
The Old Lake Highlands Neighborhood Association organizes a variety of events to bring the community together, such as porch parties at neighborhood homes during the fall, Fourth of July lake parties, holiday yard decorating contests and neighborhood cleanups. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is also a hot spot for events throughout the year, including a fall festival featuring over 100,000 pumpkin displays and Dallas Blooms, the largest annual floral festival in Southwest Dallas. To get involved in their own gardening, residents can pick produce and herbs from the community garden behind Lake Highlands Baptist Church and volunteer on monthly workdays. And if newcomers have the need for speed, they can join the Velo Veterans, a popular community cycling group, that can be seen racing all over the neighborhood in the mornings and hanging out at Green Spot. White Rock Local Market has also been a neighborhood fixture since 2009. Held at White Rock United Methodist Church every Saturday from March to December, the market sells local produce, breads, jams, specialty-made soaps and other goods from vendors within a 150-mile radius of Dallas.10 miles from Downtown Dallas
Texas State Highway Loop 12 runs directly through the neighborhood, connecting residents to Interstate 30, allowing easy access to major thoroughfares and getting around the region. Residents can conveniently reach Downtown Dallas in 10 miles, Dallas Love Field Airport in 9 miles and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in 26 miles. Dallas Area Rapid Transit provides bus and light rail services, with a light rail station a few blocks outside the neighborhood. Bus stops are along Route 244 and can be accessed by cutting through Norbuck Park.
