Rylie’s rural roots in Dallas County

Rylie is an easygoing rural suburb that’s about 12 miles southeast of Dallas. Situated between the Trinity River and U.S. Route 175, Rylie is home to many residential subdivisions, churches and green spaces along Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway. While most people enjoy the peace and quiet that the area is known for, it’s also convenient for those who commute to their jobs in Dallas less than half an hour away. With large homes and nearby amenities in Kleberg and Balch Springs, Rylie is a large bedroom community with a lot of countryside charm.

A mix of older and newer housing options

While there is a lot of new construction in communities such as Middlefield Village, many single-family homes in the area have brick or wooden exteriors and were built in the 1950s. Traditional and ranch-style homes are fairly common, some of which sit on acreage. “There are families that have been here for years,” says David Carranza, a local who’s served as the Kleberg Neighborhood Association president for four years. “There are a lot of ranches and cows in this area, and once in a while, they tend to get out. You’ll have people horseback riding on the streets themselves.” Older homes range between the lower $100,000s and upper $200,000s, while newer homes range from the upper $200,000s to the upper $600,000s.

Dallas ISD schools with a charter education option

Ebby Halliday Elementary and Nancy Moseley Elementary are both within the neighborhood and are part of the highly rated Dallas Independent School District. Both schools serve kindergarten through fifth-grade students and offer after-school activities such as chess, robotics and Esports. While many students continue their public education at nearby middle and high schools, others will apply for one of the district’s Magnet or Montessori programs through its school choice program. A+ Academy Elementary is a local tuition-free public charter school with a dual language and Gifted & Talented program.

Rylie’s parks, playgrounds and recreational facilities

Rylie Park is right next to the charter school and has a playground with basketball courts and a disc golf basket. Tea Garden Park is south of the highway and features three walking loops around a playground, a basketball court and a large oak tree. There’s a water park at Crawford Memorial Park and zip lining at Trinity Forest Adventure Park right outside the community, and kids of all ages play various youth sports at the Fireside Recreation Center. “They have soccer, basketball, tennis, big parks – the community center tries to do a lot,” Carranza says.

Highways and rapid transit to Downtown Dallas

U.S. Route 175 runs along Rylie's east side and serves as the main thoroughfare between Dallas and Seagoville. Interstate 20 also cuts through town and leads about 15 miles west to the 24-hour Select Specialty Hospital and over 40 miles west toward Fort Worth. While buses don’t pass by the area, Buckner Station is directly north of the neighborhood and offers public transportation downtown via the Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s green line. Once they’re downtown, passengers can take one of the buses to nearby restaurants, shopping centers and the Dallas Love Field airport. “You have the best of both worlds,” Carranza says. “It’s like being in the country, but you’re close enough to downtown to experience the city life.”
