Singing Hills
Singing Hills sits next to UNT's campus
Singing Hills is located just northeast of the University of North Texas with Ricketts Branch flowing straight through its center. “I don’t think many students are going to live out that way,” Nau notes. “They’re more than likely going to be living closer to downtown, where all the trendy spots are.” The neighborhood comprises mostly of ranch-style single-family homes built in the late 1950s and 1960s, along with some Traditional-style homes from the early 2000s. Homes sizes range from around 1,100 to 2,200 square feet with three to five bedrooms, and list prices tend to fall somewhere between $165,000 and $330,000, with an average sales price of $250,000. "You can still find a diamond in the rough and get a bit of a deal," Rollins says.Dallas ISD is situated close to UNT at Dallas
Children living in Singing Hills attend schools in the Dallas Independent Schools District, including Thornton Elementary School for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and Storey Middle for grades sixth through eighth. The elementary and middle schools earn a C and C-plus from Niche, respectively. Older kids can spend ninth through 12th grades at the C-graded South Oak Cliff High School, whose student-athletes are winners of the 2021 5A-Division II football state championship. For those interested in higher education without leaving home, the University of North Texas at Dallas is roughly 1 mile down University Hills Boulevard.Locals can enjoy the weather and head to the indoor recreation center at Singing Hills Park
Singing Hills Park has 14 acres of green space with a playground, walking trails, softball and soccer fields, and pickleball and tennis courts. When the Texas heat is overwhelming, Singing Hills Recreation Center offers an indoor fitness center, gymnasium and computer lab. More recreation can be found at Glendale Park’s playground, basketball courts and swimming pool, or on the 2.7-mile paved Runyon Creek Trail at the nearby University of North Texas at Dallas campus.Soul food classics aren't far from Singing Hills
Dinner at Soulman's Bar-B-Que on Lancaster Road means trying Soulman's Out of Sight Special: a chopped beef sandwich with classic sides like baked mac & cheese or fried okra. For a bite to eat and a fun night out, locals can head to Triple D Bar & Grill to grab a beer or cocktail and a burger before putting the Singing in Singing Hills at karaoke night or cheering on the Dallas Cowboys during a game night watch party. For those watching the game at home, the Cash Saver Food Outlet nearby on Ledbetter Drive has all the classic tailgate snacks. Other restaurants include Mary’s Twisted Kitchen, which is within walking distance from some Singing Hills homes. The restaurant specializes in soul food plates, along with seafood pasta and chicken alfredo. Just miles north is the no-frills Big T Plaza, a strip mall made up of flea markets, pizza parlors and other local businesses.Bigger scale events are even bigger in Dallas
The Texas State Fair operates for 24 days September through October, making it the longest-running fair in the country. The family-friendly festival covers 277 acres of the historic Fair Park and features over 70 rides. "Big Tex always makes an appearance at the front entrance," Nau says about 55-foot-tall “Big Tex”: the tallest cowboy statue in Texas. Nau also adds that the festival has the biggest ferris wheel in the nation, Texas Star, which happens to be 20-story high. Dallas also hosts the nation’s biggest floral festival every Spring; the North Texas Irish Festival, which is also one of the largest in the US; and an annual Pride parade, which celebrates its LGBTQA+ residents who make up the sixth largest queer community in the country.Getting in and around Singing Hills
Nau stresses that Dallas – the entire Metroplex, even – feels like it’s been under construction for the last 10 years. Main throughways also include Interstate-35 E and I-20; the former takes residents north to downtown Dallas, 10 miles away. DART bus stops are located along both East Camp Wisdom Road and S Marsalis Avenue. While the neighborhood itself has sidewalks, the surrounding area is not technically walkable; therefore, residents primarily commute by car. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is 30 miles north, and the closest emergency medical facility is VA North Texas Veterans Hospital, which is roughly 3 miles northeast.
