Southeast Dallas is a serene and secluded city spot
Offering the peace and quiet of an established community, Southeast Dallas is an ideal spot for anyone who wants a retreat without being far from city comforts. “It’s a good location close to downtown. It has easy access to the interstate and some seclusion,” says David Fain, owner and manager of Fain Properties, who’s a longtime Dallas resident. “It’s not a big area that people would be driving through and bringing a lot of traffic.” Homeowners in this residential area are just 7 miles from downtown, but with the tree-covered residential streets and the largest urban forest in the country nearby, it feels worlds away from the city.

Residents grow their own food at Joppy Momma’s farm
To stock up on groceries, the closest options are El Rancho Supermercado and Walmart Neighborhood Market, which are about 10 miles away on Buckner Boulevard. But locals can buy or grow their own vegetables at Joppy Momma’s Farm, located in Southeast Dallas’ historic Joppa neighborhood on Carbondale Street. Founded in the 1872, Joppa is one of the oldest Freedman settlements in Dallas. “We’re here to make sure that everyone has access to healthy food options,” says Kimberly High, the founder and director of Joppy Momma’s Farm. “We also hold diabetes education classes for the community.” For a taste of local flavor, Tha Neighborhood Kitchen on Yancy Street is the go-to spot to pick up soul food favorites, like oxtails, collard greens and mac and cheese.

Southeast Dallas is getting a new look
Brick ranch-style homes and Craftsman bungalows are the dominant styles here. There are also some modest cottages along the neighborhood streets, dotted with mature shade trees. Built-in garages are uncommon in older homes, but most houses have driveways to offer off-street parking. The neighborhood is undergoing revitalization, as evidenced by new builds scattered throughout the area. Fain estimates that roughly 60 to 70 percent of the community has been renovated or rebuilt. These new homes are usually asymmetrical modern designs, with bright white exteriors. A renovated ranch home or Craftsman typically lists for $300,000 to $350,000. Newer houses are more expensive, frequently coming on the market in the $400,000 range.

The sweeping 6,000-acre Great Trinity Forest offers miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as kayaking and canoeing on the Trinity River. Residents can access the Trinity Forest Trail at several nearby locations, including the trailhead on Great Trinity Forest Way. At South Central Park, on Fellows Lane, kids can romp around the playground and cool off on the splash pad during the summer months. The Janie C. Turner Recreation Center, just east on Elam Road, offers an indoor basketball court, boxing gym and fitness center. The recreation center provides several community activities for residents, including karate, dance instruction and after-school programs. And with a quick trip on Interstate 45, entertainment options on a much larger scale await in downtown Dallas.
