Crescent is a fishing town in Georgia’s Golden Isles region
Located about 12 miles north of Darien in Georgia’s Golden Isles region, Crescent is a fishing town whose riverfront location provides access to water recreation and fresh seafood. “A lot of folks will come to Crescent because of the space, and it’s a little slower paced,” says Erin Vaughn, an associate broker with The Listing Pros Team at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “In Crescent, you’ve got access to fishing, boating, outdoor activities and wildlife.” The community is named after the water that shapes it: The Sapelo River on its northern edge creates crescent-shaped curves on its way to the Sapelo Sound.
Many Crescent locals work in the seafood and processing industry.

Water access gives many opportunities for boating and fishing
The Sapelo River and other marshy tributaries of the Sapelo Sound surround the community, providing opportunities for boating, fishing and duck hunting. Boaters can access Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge, a barrier island with hiking trails and shore fishing. Sapelo Island is another barrier island nearby, but access is limited to guided tours and residents’ guests. St. Simons Island, which has public beaches, is about 34 miles away. The public Sapelo Hammock Golf Club is nearby.

Bungalows and ranch-style homes near the water
The marshy tributaries of the Sapelo Sound surround the community, and several properties have water views. Those that are inland typically sit close together in the shade of Spanish moss-covered live oaks. Most homes are bungalows and ranch-style houses, with prices that generally range from $200,000 to $550,000. Manufactured homes can cost between $110,000 and $190,000. Undeveloped lots range from $25,000 to $70,000 for an inland parcel and $200,000 to $300,000 for a waterfront lot, though a 26-acre parcel was recently listed for $1.5 million. The overall CAP Index crime score is 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Celebrating shrimp at the Blessing of the Fleet Festival
Each April for over 50 years, the annual Blessing of the Fleet Festival has drawn crowds to Darien’s riverfront to send off the community’s shrimping boats at the beginning of shrimp season. The three-day event includes a shrimp-heading competition, live music and a boat parade.
Fresh, local seafood is served in area restaurants and stores
Crescent and the waterfront communities in McIntosh County are known for their seafood. At The Fish Dock Bar and Grill on the waterfront, local fish is handpicked straight from boats that dock right outside the restaurant, and the restaurant’s little neck clams are sourced from the owner’s clam farm. Home chefs can buy local shrimp from the Sapelo Shrimp Company, and a Piggly Wiggly grocery store is nearby. More restaurants are in Darien. “Darien’s a really cute town,” Vaughn says. “It's growing a lot, and there are a lot of great seafood restaurants there.” She recommends Skippers’ Fish Camp, a casual riverfront restaurant with a rustic atmosphere.

At varying risk for flooding, hurricanes and wildfire
Parts of Crescent are in FEMA-designated flood zones, but most of the area’s flooding occurs in uninhabited areas. The community is also at risk for hurricanes, though the storms rarely make landfall in Georgia. “We’re located in what’s called the Georgia Bite — it looks like someone took a bite out of Georgia,” Vaughn says of the state’s curved coastline. “It has protected us a lot because hurricanes generally skip over us and hit Savannah, Charleston or the Outer Banks instead. In all, we’re really fortunate.” Though landfall here is uncommon, the community can still feel the effects of nearby hurricanes, including storm surge flooding, heavy rainfall and wind damage. Crescent’s dense forests also put the area at risk for wildfire, though there have been no recent fires.
Since Crescent is built on the water, parts of it are prone to flooding.
"No Wake" signs mark shallow parts of the Sapelo where Crescent boaters must maintain lower speeds.
