Great Neck offers a seaside environment in Dartmouth
On the southern coastline of Dartmouth, Great Neck is a Massachusetts neighborhood with a classic seaside atmosphere. Homes are interspersed with tracts of land preserved by the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust, while Buzzards Bay lies between the beaches of Great Neck and offshore islands. Despite a mix of older and newer homes in the area, it can feel like a step back in time, and that element is the main appeal of Great Neck. “The whole area has retained an old-fashioned feeling,” says William Milbury, a real estate broker and owner of Milbury & Co. “People home in on the area because it has iconic, old-fashioned architecture and a pristine landscape.”
Horseneck Road, which winds through central Great Neck, is one of the area’s most notable features. “It is an iconic road known for its scenery,” says Milbury, who has lived in the area for 25 years and worked in real estate for 40. “The road is framed with these beautiful, old stone walls and long vistas over the fields to Slocums River. It’s a special little area. Everybody who goes there is infatuated with the village.” Residents revel in the peaceful environment, where sea air comes rolling in off the bay but it is less than 10 miles from the hub of central Dartmouth and the seaside village of Padanaram.

Other housing designs include ranch-style homes and custom builds. “Great Neck is very private,” Milbury says. “There’s something for everyone. It’s not just fabulous, pricey waterfront estates; one can find a nice, little waterfront village house or Cape for a modest amount of money and still have access to many of the same beautiful things.” Smaller ranch-style homes and Capes can still typically cost more than $700,000, while larger farmhouses and custom builds, some on multi-acre lots, often sell for over $1 million. The neighborhood receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.
