Idlewood is packed with cul de sac neighborhoods like this one.
Family-friendly South Coast community with suburban serenity
Peaceful, leafy cul-de-sacs, a country club, a mall a mile away and the city of New Bedford right down Route 6 are all factors that could convince those seeking suburban comfort to consider Idlewood. Still, those aren’t the only things drawing homebuyers to this North Dartmouth neighborhood: “You have the zoo, the parks and easy access to the highways,” says Erin Hovan, a Realtor and broker associate with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Robert Paul Properties. “Saint Luke’s Hospital is right there. So, a lot of young professionals come into the area for employment nearby,” continues Hovan, who’s been selling homes along Massachusetts' South Coast since 2016. The community has a multigenerational feel, as families tend to stick around, according to Sarah Haskell Aruda, a clerk at Dartmouth Town Hall.
Historic colonials are often hidden among modern listings throughout Idlewood.
Diverse home styles for different lifestyles
Idlewood homes closest to New Bedford sit shoulder to shoulder, with front steps leading directly onto narrow sidewalks. Toward Idlewood’s center, shallow yards expand into neat lawns, homes sit farther apart, and sidewalks disappear. At the neighborhood’s western edge, suburban streets give way to wooded roads and secluded cul-de-sacs, where tall trees and greenery partially conceal homes. Homes range in style, from two-story clapboard colonials and low-lying ranch-style dwellings to shingled New England-style houses. They also vary in age, with most built between the 1930s and 1970s. Buyers can also find a few Victorian homes and 21st-century builds. Prices generally range from $350,000 to $700,000, with outliers selling for as much as $1.2 million or as little as $150,000. Inventory is currently low, with homes selling on average after only 25 days on the market.

Family fun at Buttonwood Park Zoo
Idlewood borders the Buttonwood Park Historic District, which encompasses a 97-acre park. Aruda says this green space is a big neighborhood draw: “Little kids love the park zoo. It also has a paved path all the way around that measures a mile exactly, so lots of people use it for exercise.” Hovan agrees: “You’ll see joggers out on any given day in the park and on the bike paths.” Buttonwood’s scenic pond is open for boating, fishing and even frosty wintertime ice skating. Golfers can enjoy the rolling greens at Allendale Country Club and Country Club of New Bedford. When the weather is warm, families can head a few miles to Clarks Cove and relax on the sandy beach at Jones Park.

Retail therapy is a quick drive down Route 6 to Dartmouth Mall and nearby shopping centers. Shaw’s is the neighborhood grocery store. If they don't feel like making the trek to New Bedford’s many restaurants, locals can head to Joe’s Original for a dinner closer to home. This neighborhood staple, brightly decorated with pop art, serves everything from Cajun-spiced jambalaya to wood-fired pizzas. On Date Night Wednesday, grab a red leather booth and enjoy a special deal with your special someone. Or, for an afternoon treat, order a scoop from John George Ice Cream, which offers outdoor seating on its grassy, open lawn.
Getting around the South Coast
Cyclists here can enjoy the trails around Buttonwood Park and Zoo, and while there are some sidewalks in the neighborhood, most residents drive around. Route 6 bounds Idlewood to the north, providing easy access to New Bedford, about a mile away, and Interstate 195. Boston is about a 58-mile drive. Travel time can exceed an hour and a half when traffic is heavy. Cape Cod is a 50-mile drive away, while Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport is roughly a 38-mile drive. Residents without cars can catch a Southeastern Regional Transit Authority (SRTA) bus at stops lining Route 6.
