North Apponagansett blends rural charm with coastal culture
North Apponagansett sits between Westport and Dartmouth, taking pieces of both worlds. There’s a bit of rural flair from Westport and the cultural or dining attractions of Dartmouth, all blending into what some Realtors call the “country coastal” lifestyle.“This area of Dartmouth used to be an old seaport,” says Realtor Ellie Wickes. “You’ve got the Bedford Yacht Club nearby, as well as lots of cute little shops.”
Million-dollar homes with large lots and custom interiors
It’s not uncommon for homes here to be in the million-dollar range. There are a lot of contemporary styles, like a modern farmhouse colonial, located in a quiet suburban development with cul-de-sacs. Inside, there’s a continuation of the modern farmhouse aesthetic with stainless steel appliances and quartz countertops. Another type of home here is a Craftsman-style ranch, sprawling across nearly 3,000 square feet. Lots are also big, with many bigger than an acre. Look for bespoke touches like stone accents and a chef’s kitchen. Home interiors reflect a mix of rustic and refined: earth tone color palettes, cabinetry with heavy wood grain and tiled bathroom walls.
Joseph DeMello Elementary enrolls nearly 400 students in Grades 1-5, and has a student-teacher ratio of 14-to-one. Niche awards the school an A in the teachers category. Dartmouth Middle steps up the population size, with 800 students enrolled in Grades 6-8. And yet the school maintains an 11-to-one student-teacher ratio, helping it to earn an A-plus in the teachers category. With over 1,000 students, Dartmouth High is the largest school in the local pipeline. Despite its size, it also maintains a close student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1, earning an A in the teachers category. Niche also gives the school a B-plus in the clubs and activities category. The music department, in particular, is known for high achievement, winning consecutive regional championships throughout the 2010s.
Wildlife sightings range from salamanders to birds of prey
Residents don’t have to travel far for outdoor recreation, either. Star of the Sea Reserve has an illustrious name, and rightly so: it used to be a gravel mining operation, but today it’s a great place to explore and relax in nature. Take to the trails and be rewarded with a view of Apponagansett Bay. This is also where visitors can see “country coastal” lifestyle in action: starting out with oak and birch forests, they’ll encounter salamanders in wetter areas, while near the coast, they may cross paths with fiddler crabs and birds of prey.
Neighborhood restaurants serve pizza, seafood and cupcakes
While there’s certainly a vibrant dining scene in nearby New Bedford, there are also wholesome neighborhood hotspots in North Apponagansett. Friendly Pizza lives up to its name with attentive staff, comfy booth-style seating and a nearly 50-year-old menu that has perfected the art of the pie – try the scallop and shrimp pizza for some coastal comfort. Open since 2009, Cravings Cakes invites diners to sink their teeth into chocolate ganache and vanilla buttercream frosting.
