How Gateway blends suburbia with lake life and military jobs

Along the border of Dayton and Riverside, Gateway pairs one small subdivision with expansive green spaces, creating both an unconventional and traditional suburban area. The residential part of the community is more conventional, offering tranquil cul-de-sacs lined with contemporary homes. The rest of the neighborhood consists of Eastwood Metro Park's expansive waterways and highways like state Route 4. Residents can spend their days boating, fishing or hiking, and commuters are minutes from shopping centers and major Dayton employers, like the local U.S. Air Force base. Students attend Fairborn public schools.

Explore a small subdivision from the 1990s with high-price homes

The residential part of Gateway only includes a single subdivision. "It's much smaller than Forest Ridge Quail Hollow to the north, but residents love the small community feel here," says Kerry Santiago, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Heritage Realtors. The neighborhood mainly has one- and two-story New Traditional homes with three to four bedrooms. Most were built between the 1990s and the early 2000s. Streets have an air of traditional suburbia, with neatly trimmed lawns, tidy shrubs, maturing trees and the occasional basketball hoop facing out toward cul-de-sac streets. Sidewalks and low through traffic mean you'll often see your neighbors out taking a morning stroll.

Homes tend to be relatively more expensive than surrounding areas, like Forest Ridge Quail Hollow and Avondale. Prices usually range between the mid $200,000s and the mid $300,000s. Occasionally, you'll see properties for less than $200,000 or more than $400,000, depending on a home's condition, size or architecture.

Enjoy a quick commute to Wright-Patt Air Force Base and downtown

Residents have a speedy commute to Dayton's largest employer, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Gateway is minutes away from the base, making the neighborhood a sensible choice for military personnel and their families. State Route 4, which cuts through the neighborhood, also makes Downtown Dayton quickly accessible. "The location is great for commuters who want to find a reasonable single-family home with an easy drive into the city," Santiago says.

Boating, fishing and hiking anchor the area’s outdoor life

Gateway's key attractions are the lakes of Eastwood MetroPark. The lakes take up most of the neighborhood, stretching for miles along state Route 4. With this in mind, Eastwood MetroPark is unsurprisingly a popular spot for boating and paddling. Cast a line, and you can catch a wide variety of fish, from walleye to largemouth bass. You can also fish and kayak along the Mad River, which winds past the lakes. Hiking trails like the Mad River, Buckeye and North Country trails follow the river and connect to larger trail systems in the city and the county.

Students attend Fairborn schools with Dayton options

Although Gateway is within Dayton city limits, the neighborhood is officially part of the Fairborn City School District. Residents could still attend Dayton Public Schools by applying during annual open enrollment, but Fairborn schools are generally more sought after than Dayton schools. The district also only accepts students living within its boundaries, and Gateway locals make the cut-off.

Nearby roads offer fast access to local restaurants and shops

You'll have to drive a mile or two outside the neighborhood to shop or dine out. Major shopping centers in Huber Heights, Riverside and downtown Dayton are about 6 or 7 miles away, but a few businesses are closer to home. Harshman Road and Valley Pike offer many popular fast-food chains and a few local restaurants, like:

  • Akashi Sushi Bar, a highly rated spot for Japanese cuisine and hand-rolled sushi
  • Debbie's Restaurant, a classic diner for traditional American fare served all day
  • Christy Club, a neighborhood bar for drinks and a round of pool with friends
