Restoring the historical
While first impressions of MacFarlane can be humble, closer inspection reveals a past worth restoring. “There are some massive, estate-style homes in the neighborhood from long ago when we had thriving manufacturing plants in Dayton,” says Miranda Biedenharn, who works with Comey and Shepherd Realtors and has been selling homes in the area for 15 years. “The homes were forgotten about and started to fall apart, but recently, there has been a push to restore them to their former glory.” Cape Cod, Craftsman, and American Foursquare are popular housing styles in the area, many over 100 years old. On the one hand, this offers a historical quality that some homeowners find irresistible. On the other, these fixer-upper houses often require a level of investment equal to the price of the building itself. Worn sidewalks connect homes to local commercial zones, giving the area a level of walkability. Street parking and small, grassy yards are the standard. Homes generally run a price range between $50,000 and $150,000.

Poetry at the Paul Laurence Dunbar House
Burkham Center Park is a public expanse of greenery dotted with mature trees, multiple playground sets, basketball hoops and vast stretches of grass for picnics, games of tag and comparing cloud shapes. Named for the lauded African-American poet who once made it his home, the Paul Laurence Dunbar House offers guided tours and free admission for anyone interested in the literary side of Dayton.

CCP at the International School
Ohio’s Open Enrollment policy allows students to attend any school they see fit, not limiting them to their local district. Students can begin at Westwood Elementary, which scores a C-minus on Niche, before heading to Wogaman Middle School, which has a D-plus. High schoolers can enroll at the International School at Residence Park, which has a D-plus and offers College Credit Plus, enabling students to earn college credits as they finish their diploma. Those needing extra help can attend Mound Street Academy, which scores a D and works directly with students in danger of dropping out or leaving their education unfinished.

Organizations like the Dakota Center play an integral part in the local community, hosting after-school homework programs for kids, seniors' social activities, and a community basketball team.

Convenient to downtown and Miami Valley Hospital
Bordered to the south by U.S. Route 35, travel throughout the Dayton area and beyond is convenient, including the downtown area, which can be found less than 2 miles northeast. Miami Valley Hospital is less than 4 miles to the east, while the Dayton International Airport is 14 miles north. Public transportation is popular, and the Dayton RTA has a bus line that services the entire Greater Dayton area, including several stops in MacFarlane.A basket of chicken at Shark's
Shark's Fish and Chicken is a local favorite for casual baskets of fried shrimp, chicken and fish. The Save Food Supermarket is less than a mile southwest, and the Westown Shopping Center is 2.5 miles west, just past Arlington Heights.
